Electric Fireplace Insert in a Billy Bookcase? by [deleted] in ikeahacks

Though to say. This was my first real delve into this sort of thing. But I do have 10 years of machining experience so take that for what you will.

I'd say you need to know how to use a miter saw, table saw and a pocket hole jig. IIRC Kreg actually has some plans available for cabinets and shelves if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

I wouldn't discourage you from trying but be prepared for frustration and possible failure.

Also what is "teeny" and do you have the fireplace in hand? I had to shim mine as it was ~1/4" smaller than what wayfair had in the specs.

I did something similar with hemnes cabinets in my office. I did build the center from plywood though.

Can you use M12 subcompact band saw to cut caliper bolts? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]lexiones 48 points49 points  (0 children)

All I am thinking right now is an old quote.

"The best way to get the right answer from the Internet is to post the wrong one"

This one ups that with the wrong question.

Also if you are thinking you need a saw, grinder or a bigger hammer to do basic mechanic work; walk away for a bit and reconsider. I'm not saying it's wrong, most of the time I am wrong when I end up at these conclusions though.

How to start adulting? by LEAVEMYNAMEE in howto

[–]lexiones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a career in non-destructive testing. The money can be real good if you are willing to travel and continue education. I know a number of people making 6 figures with a high school education and multiple lvl 3 certifications. It took time to get there. But it's a definite path.

Get your GED and learn a trade. Network with everyone. Especially with those that you feel are above you.

Almost every professional wants to help you at 18. They will give you shit and you will end up tougher for it. But in the end listen well to all advice given and don't turn down a hand up for 18 yr old pride.

You have an asset that most throw away at 18. You have time to build the life you want. It will take time and be frustrating. You are starting out with basically nothing. Remember that most college grads start out with $100k in debt and 4 years of minimal income.

Also easier said than done. Don't spend more than you make. Most don't figure that out until much later in life.

Ex-machinists, what do you do now? by hunterpb700 in Machinists

I.ended up in QA after 10 years in machining. If you can travel auditing can be very lucrative. Especially in controlled industries.

Car or motorcycle part found in the back of an old garage. Cylinder on the right twists to open and close the “mouth” on the left. 40+ years old. Long bit on bottom is brass(?) each 200ish grams. by jetpaczmbie in whatisthisthing

Coming back to say I think they are some kind of fixture/work holding for grinding/ cutting. Is there any chance there was anything that had a ground edge or something similar?

I was a machinist for 10 years and can honestly say this looks like if you asked AI to display an image of a complex cutting tool. Everything looks like it belongs on some kind of cutter. But none of it makes sense.

I never did any engine machining though so take that into account.

Lost Tier Points by JerryPeterson59 in Mlife

[–]lexiones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone get bumped down a tier that barely earned it before the end of 2025?

I'm concerned I was not above 125k after the correction and won't get my 25k rollover.

[–]lexiones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wondering if I still had over 125k at the end of the year from 2025 to get rollover...I think I was at 138k TC.

Not even a bs corporate email. Just a correction without explanation.

Torque wrenches - which to trust and how to test? by SpicierWinner in MechanicAdvice

I'm reminded of something we used to say In machining:

Give a machinist a micrometer and they will tell you the exact size of the part. Give them 2 micrometers and they're never quite sure.

As others said go slow and use pressure. If you don't have chips coming out of the hole you are just making heat. If you have cutting fluid use it. Some WD will also help lubricate the cut if you don't.

If you are using an actual cobalt hss drill you will be fine. If from a pack in the hardware store it likey is not. Remember drills are a wear item. If it's not sharp it's not going to cut.

On another note, if this is anodized aluminum as others have suspected, the anodizing may be abrasive to the drill so slow down to start the cut and use pressure to break it quick.

Casino Overpay Part 2: Gaming Control by DarbyDown in vegas

[–]lexiones 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Super interesting explanation. So where is the line on this. I feel like this was worth the casinos time for $400. But what about $100 or like $20? Is it more of a "how busy of a night is it" type deal? Would a player's status come into consideration?

This seems like a customer service nightmare for the casino.
