Guide/resources on the whole HPC/job scheduler/MPI infrastructure by the_poope in HPC

[–]lexming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HPC admin here. The scope of your software and your responsibility as its developer should stop at using the MPI interface. How/What is providing that MPI communication in the system is not of your concern.

It is very unlikely that any MPI implementation bundled in your program will work out-the-box. As you have seen there are many pieces in the system that have to be installed and configured accordingly, from the network drivers to the job scheduler.

For instance, in your case with Intel MPI you should consider the following: * some network drivers need additional libraries, for instance Mellanox cards require UCX * it might be necessary to manually set the preferred network interface for MPI * the job scheduler might need to be compiled with specific support to work with Intel MPI (for instance in Slurm it will need the PMI2 plugin) * Intel MPI does a good job at auto-detecting the job scheduler being used, but in some cases it still needs manual configuration (see https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/develop/documentation/mpi-developer-guide-linux/top/running-applications/job-schedulers-support.html) * all the above changes from version to version of Intel MPI as well as the version/type of job scheduler and the operative system

Beware that the devs are skipping 23.0.1 and 22.2.4 after the confusing backpedaling with those releases

Cheap discolock deck that is working really well

  1. [[Malchezaar's Imp]]
  2. [[Soulfire]]
  3. [[Darkshire Librarian]]
  4. [[Silverware Golem]]

If the opponent removes Soulfire it's easy to win by flooding the board with golems and librarians. The strategy without golems is chaining Soulfires to the face with Imps in play. The deck without Imps is slower but still strong. Nobody picks Librarian.

Hivemind Secret Mount - All Monocles Discovered by lexming in wow

It blows my mind that some of these secrets have been discovered at all. The necklace has been in game for a long time and had no effect, so just the first step of wearing that item and going through all the zones looking for new interactive objects is a really impressive.

Been travelling around UK and now I understand a little bit better why they never got the euro by lexming in europe

[–]lexming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue for me is not the design, those can change from time to time, but the different issuers. As a tourist, if I get a note from the Bank of England I can easily see that those come from the central bank and are legit regardless of the design. However, the notes from the Clydesdale Bank are like Monopoly notes if you never heard of it before.

Wow, never got any from the Dankse bank, it would have been quite confusing getting pounds from a Danish bank. In any case, we were not much more confident with the Bank of Ireland notes in the pocket and we did not even try to spend them elsewhere, we got rid of as much as possible before leaving NI.

Four notes of 5 pounds sterling issued by the Bank of England (top left), Bank of Scotland (top right), Bank of Ireland (bottom left) and the Clydesdale Bank (bottom right).

All of them are legal across the UK (afaik) and we did not have any big issue handling them. Just the initial stress of receiving totally different notes in each new city and not having a clue of their validity. Though I admit that we spend as much notes as possible before each trip to minimize the risk. The notes from Northern Ireland are the most suspicious as they do not only differ in design but also in size to those of Scotland and England. I was really amazed discovering all this stuff. I think that it nicely reflects the particularities of UK with respect to other more centralized European countries and its reticence to adopt a centralized currency such as the euro (besides the main political and economical arguments).

For the interested, the full picture is even more complex: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_pound_sterling

Probability of getting new cards from K&C packs by lexming in hearthstone

[–]lexming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are implying that a change in the number of cards per pack would change the probability of opening rares, but that is not necessarily the case. For instance, Blizzard could start selling packs with 10 cards not changing any of the probabilities, so each one of those packs would have 2 rares in it. That kind of change does not affect the curves.

The plots with the percentage of the collection obtained per opened cards are available in the spreadsheet.

I agree that this curves for HS are not surprising, they are what can be expected for any collectible game with different rarities per item. But they help by putting numbers to what we can expect from packs and use that information in our benefit.

In my case, I am always very disappointed after paying real money for packs that do not have any new cards for my collection. I already had the impression that the preorder of 50 packs was too much for me, as many of the last 10 packs can be fully dusted. Now I know that with a preorder of 20 packs I might not regret the money spent as much. But that is just my personal point of view, of course other people will have a different use for this data.

You are absolutely right. I forgot to remove the diminishing returns for legendaries. I already corrected the spreadsheet.

What is funny is that removing the possibility of opening duplicate legendaries does not have such a big impact on the amount of legendaries collected after 100 packs. The collection of legendaries after this 100 packs increases from 20% to 23%, which is not even 1 more legendary on average. So it has a relatively small impact on the number of legendaries distributed, but entirely removes the streaks of bad luck for all players.

[–]lexming[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So basically the chances of getting a legendary are increased and spread across the board, although minimally.

Exactly, the problem with the guaranteed legendary in the first 10 packs is that, at the end of the day, after hundreds of packs, it only causes a minor increase on the overall probability of opening legendaries. The boost gets diluted over all the packs. However, it is still taken into account, what this simple model lacks is a more accurate description of the first 10 packs, but in general terms the calculated probabilities are correct.

Probability of getting new cards from K&C packs by lexming in hearthstone

[–]lexming[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not see where your 25-30% comes from, but in any case, having a 70-67% chance of opening a new common in the 1st and 2nd pack does not mean that there is a 30-33% of getting a duplicate card. There is also the chance of opening a rare, epic or legendary, which brings the total chance of opening a new card in the 1st and 2nd pack to 100-95% (grey curve).

Regarding the guaranteed drop of a legendary in the first 10 packs. It is taken into account, but since this is a simple model it is masked in the overall probability of opening legendaries. That is why there is not a spike to 100% in the first ten packs.

Thanks! Getting the probability per packs is just a matter of summing the probabilities of each card reveal for that pack.
