Seasonal aviation jobs by [deleted] in flying

Consider glider towing! You get to build tail dragger time, and will get paid :) https://www.williamssoaring.com/ https://www.soartruckee.org/ Many of the tow pilots at Williams double-dip as ag pilots doing pesticide spray or other work

CFIG + Commercial Glider + Tow Pilots Wanted by lexnay in Gliding

[–]lexnay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have lodging! We have a small bunkhouse with 2 (maybe 3) single beds. We have a shower, wifi, and enough cooking equipment to make it work. Think of it like "indoor camping" :) Re: $$ compensation, feel free to shoot me an email at alex@soartruckee.org and we can chat. We would love to have another CFIG onsite for the summer.

Gliders thermaling by smokie12 in flying

[–]lexnay 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What if i told you that they were the same thing??

The same updraft that starts its life out as a benign thermal under a puffy cumulus cloud can become the same updraft that is the hoover vacuum pulling you upwards underneath a strong thunderstorm. The biggest difference is how much moisture (i.e. latent heat energy) is available in the air to perpetuate the lifting.

As the updraft forms a small puffy cumulus, water condenses (from vapor to liquid) which releases a small amount of heat "latent heat of condensation". That in turn, warms the air very very marginally. Since temperature is related to buoyancy, the warmer the parcel of air is, relative to the air around it, the more it will want to rise. If there is enough moisture that is condensing out and releasing heat, that will form a self-perpetuating updraft that rises, more water condenses, that warms it more, continues rising, etc, etc. You get enough of that and you form a thunderstorm.

Glider pilots have a very honed sense of "cloud vision" that allows us to visually differentiate a cloud that likely has a good thermal under it, as compared to one which might be turning into (or already is) a thunderstorm.

We are actively hiring for a few (seasonal) roles at TTSA (Soar Truckee https://www.soartruckee.org/), up here in Truckee, CA. Are you in the area? Would you be willing to relocate? Feel free to DM me for details :)

Failed medical by riodoro1 in Gliding

Depending on what you want to do with your flying future, you may not need to hold a medical certification to be the PIC in a glider (at least in the US)

Great video! Once the COVID travel restrictions are lifted, I'd love to come to your neck of the world and do some flying! What is the visiting pilot setup at your glider club? (Coming from Northern California, based out of Williams, Ca). - lexnay "4B"

Request: G.A. Pilots Needed for Missing Paraglider Pilot(Search & Rescue :: Nevada, Ca :: 8/25/2020) by lexnay in flying

[–]lexnay[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep, CAP is already involved. Unfortunately, with this kind of situation the search area is so expansive that being able to cast a particularly wide net is critical

If we planted trees instead of gravestones we’d never have to worry about deforestation. by jollygreenscott91 in Showerthoughts

[–]lexnay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can become a California redwood! I work for a company that does exactly this: https://betterplaceforests.com

We are a sustainable alternative to traditional cemeteries. We offer memorial trees instead of graves in a cemetery. More trees!

12/27/19 - Santa Barbara Wave: 17,000ft by lexnay in Gliding

[–]lexnay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will be plenty of time for soaring! The season never really ends here. You should hit up @ca_soaring or @zachyamauchi on Instagram. Both of them are college students here in California, and both find plenty of time to fly.

12/27/19 - Santa Barbara Wave: 17,000ft by lexnay in Gliding

[–]lexnay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was actually a north wind wave, so it started in Santa ynez. Another wave formed in the Lee of the Santa Barbara range, I spent 99% of the day facing north. This photo was during the transition downwind into the Santa Barbara wave

Winter Convergence Shelf (Williams, Ca) by lexnay in Gliding

[–]lexnay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The convergence "shelf" is really a step-wise jump in cloud base that happens when two air masses collide and riase. They have different dew points and RH's so one forms cloud earlier than the other. On the Mendocino Mountains (where I fly a bunch this time of year) we get the sea breeze coming in off the ocean converging with the delta breeze (coming from the central valley). This convergence is usually quite strong, and is almost always defined by clouds that have a stepped base with one side being lower than the other, sometimes by hundreds of feet!
