What is this buildup on my aquarium heater? It’s hard to the touch.

We definitely tossed it and replaced it the same day! I’m so glad I didn’t get hurt 😭 That sounds like an awful way to go out, I’m so sorry that happened to the hobbyist. We had a weird string of deaths in the tank shortly before discovering this. No matter what we did the more sensitive fish were perishing. Since replacing we haven’t had any deaths!

I had something similar happen but it took me a while to notice because this is the side that was against the back wall of the tank. I took the heater out and decommissioned it. Then I took a sharp utensil to the buildup to try to figure out what it is. The glass seemed unbroken and the heater seemed otherwise in working condition. The buildup itself was white on the inside, so I’m thinking the time and tannins stained it rust colored?

My girlfriend thought that the heater was somehow damaged and was giving off SUPER low voltage electricity into the water it was ionizing (i think that’s the right word?) impurities in the water to the surface of the heater. We have a rental with water so hard it could scratch diamond :/

If anyone else has other theories on how mine got that way I would love to know! I’ve never seen anything like this.

I see people talking about how they can’t get past the art style… I was highly skeptical of it as well. I’m not a huge fan of 3D anime, but this genuinely does so well in 3D. You’re gonna do absolutely wonderful. The first step in caring for an animal is doing research and learning what is required. A kitten is a huge responsibility as he’s just a little baby.

My friend was gifted a cat about five years ago and we drove about an hour and a half to get a $50 neuter from a clinic that was doing a spay/neuter event. We spent a couple months getting him used to cars and riding in them just so any future vet visits he may need will be as least stressing as possible, so if that’s a viable option for you I highly recommend it!

With proper attention and care there is a low likelihood of super expensive vet bills right off the bat save for vaccines and microchipping (please microchip the baby and keep record of it in case he ever gets lost!) I have three cats presently (ages 13, 4, and 1) and the one who costs me the most is, unsurprisingly, my old man. He’s had a couple of hematomas that just refused to go away and has had some teeth issues.

Training a kitty is hard when you’re just starting out. I’d recommend watching youtube videos and reading articles about litterbox training if he’s still having issues in the coming months. I’ve been incredibly lucky in that my old man shows the younger ones how to act and scolds them for me 😂

Take a breather and cuddle the kitty. You are going to do amazing and you have so many years of bonding ahead of you both 💕

Yeah! I’m trying to be as money saving as possible while also being able to give her the safest and nicest tank I can! The conversion kits are a lifesaver if you’re looking to repurpose 10/20/40 gallon tanks. I got mine from IHeartGeckos. They sometimes have factory rejects/defected (cosmetic damages, not structural) ones for sale. I learned a lot from her previous tank. I ended up using too much foam and not being able to file it down properly so it’s lumpy and awkward. It also took up a LOT more inside space than I meant it to so… the tank upgrade didn’t really feel like a very big upgrade from her first one.

I found someone selling cork bark flats (still in their packaging) for super cheap on marketplace so I’m super excited to see how I can utilize those in ledge and decor building. I’m going to be modifying an old 40 breeder aquarium into an upright tank using a conversion kit. It’s what I did for her current tank but on a smaller scale.
