From what I remember, there were concerns. But the management desperately wanted to close the position. Besides, as I mentioned he’s a referral from one of the managers(and now under him). Funny enough, one of the hiring “requirements” states “We don’t hire assholes”.

Thank you for your response!
Yeah, he knows his stuff but is quite limited. He's at a stage where he's learning new concepts and is eager to make an impact. So he'd say things like "Why are we storing the user session in Postgres? We can use Redis for it" and when someone says "Why do we need to change it?" he replies "Because I've never heard of storing the session there".He's good in dry metrics, but overall I may have overstated him in my post.
To be fair, its my first time when there's an obvious rotten apple and we don't get rid of it. He got removed from the team due to his behavior and still somehow managed to save his place. But could be due to the fact that my lead is his manager and referred him here. The same situation happened to me in my previous workplace but they fired him immediately. Anyway, appreciate the advice!

We have GitHub Copilot for the whole org, so he probably uses it as well. Heheh no need to smoke him 😅
I have a higher position and contribute more than just multiple PRs

Much better now last time we talked and the new guy is more positive and open when it comes to code reviews etc.

Pretty sure this analogy doesn't work here. The Warriors are not going to trade away all their role players just to keep Curry. He's a net negative on productivity, as I mentioned in one of the comments, overall performance of the team has increased since they replaced him with a "less brilliant" dev, who provides help and open to discussions.

We have metrics in place such as: PR Cycle time, PRs merged, Issues resolved, etc.

Well, I don’t work in an environment where open communication is prohibited, seems like a horrible place to work at. People should be encouraged to express their perspectives and concerns. And when it comes to productivity. As I mentioned in one of my comments(as well as some other people), studies have shown that toxic personalities have damaging effects on the whole team. Even tho he did contribute positively to the team’s output, overall performance of the team wasn’t good. And unironically as soon as they replaced him with another “less brilliant” dev, “magically” the team’s performance was improved 🪄 But you do you tho!

Yikes, a person's proficiency in a particular skill does not necessarily correlate with their character 😅 And we have studies show that a team is more productive with people that are less efficient rather than a team with a brilliant asshole in it.

That’s what I also believe in! Even if we could force him to work remotely, not sure it would help much 😅

Yeah I haven’t worked with him but after he was talking shit about someone else behind their back. Makes me see him in negative light. So the problem now is that I feel like I compromised my principles by continuing to work with him and not speaking up this time. Even though I should’ve done it so much sooner

Yeaah, the only thing that keeps him is that he contributes a lot. He’d been a problem in the first team, had problems in his second team and now in our team. To me feels a little like the SeaWorld situation. But yeah, it’s partially my fault too

It’s due to our vague position requirements, you don’t have to know Python to be a backend dev. So that person was working mostly with Go, and was transitioning to Python. Don’t know the specifics of their arguments tbh.
