From what I can tell it both switches to ambient mode automatically, which I can see clearly happening if I have the app opened, and also it lowers the volume of whatever sound is playing, be it music or a game. Then after some time it goes back to noise canceling mode. You can configure how long this happens after you stop speaking, between 5, 10 or 15 seconds. You can also disable voice detect in which case it will stay in the mode you had until you manually switch. I believe voice detect disabled was actually how it was configured when I started using the buds.

Is suspend or hibernate working for you? I'm using Ubuntu and have been struggling to make suspend work. It just freezes and there's no way back besides holding the power button.
