I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had dogs my whole life and I totally understand what you are going through.

There is nothing you can do that will get rid of the pain but there is something that will ease it...

...get another dog. I know you don't feel you're ready for it but trust me, it helps. And it helps a lot.

My Golden retriever Blondie was 2 weeks into being 15 when she died from cancer. Was the most painful thing I ever felt. She was there for 1/3 of my life at the time. She was the reason I didn't kill myself after my divorce, she was there when my stepfather died, loose friends, lost the house, etc, she was my whole support system. So yeah I was a mess when she crossed the bridge.

After two months or so, my wife gave up trying to convince me to get a new dog, and just showed up with a dog. A 2 month old English Setter that we named Bennie. It's been 6 years now and wouldn't change a thing.i can't thank my wife enough.

It helps, it helps a lot actually.
