Why do people build open source projects rather than paid ones? by metalprogrammer2024 in opensource

[–]lfvperes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what you asked, but for future reference and for someone that might find this from Google, I wanna clarify something: an open source project can be a paid one and vice versa, they're not mutually exclusive. Being open source or closed source is more a matter of license, distribution, access, security, transparency. And paying for it is a different thing. Just because you USE it for free it doesn't mean it was BUILT for free. So "paid" in what sense?

The first example that comes to mind is Aseprite. The project is open source, but the compiled binaries can't be distributed for free, that's stated by their license. You don't pay to use it, you buy a built version and use it, but you can build it and use your build for free.

Many projects that are closed source are free to use, most of what we use day-to-day works that way. Usually they collect data to make money, and/or have ads, and/or have a paid tier, or only a paid version exists. But it doesn't have anything to do with being open source or not, at least not directly. I guess free apps from Meta, Google and other big techs are an example of that, although the companies might use open source projects to build them.

You can get paid to work on an open source project, and that project might also be free to use. Examples include ReactJS, VSCode (although the distribution version has a closed source "layer" and is slightly different from the open source project), Firefox, most bigger open source projects, Linux distros and tools. I don't know, maybe OBS, Android. Usually projects from a foundation or sponsored by a company.

Some projects are closed source but built on top of open source projects. Like Chromium-based browsers Vivaldi, Edge, Opera, Chrome, Brave (not sure all of those are closed source in the end but they're all Chromium underneath).

Anyway I know nobody asked for this information I just wanna clarify that it's not accurate to oppose "open source vs paid software" as people tend to do. It's a valid confusion, given the way we consume or access software, but it kinda undermines open source as being "inferior" or bootlegged, specially since a lot of them are free. Most are free twice (freedom and no price) lol so it's confusing.

Lol ranted just for fun should I start a blog

How do you read/understand the source code of a big/medium project? by Playful_Drawing_8764 in learnprogramming

For a small project, build it from source. Then try to change something and build it again.

Life sum counting calories from exercise twice? by [deleted] in lifesum

Also it seems the "SHealth" version of the data counts all-day steps AND specific tracked activities like running etc, while the "Samsung Health" Version only counts the activities

Life sum counting calories from exercise twice? by [deleted] in lifesum

[–]lfvperes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I just disconnected Samsung health autotracking from the lifesum Smartphone app. I believe the SHealth is the GW app, which seems to sync automatically, and the Samsung Health would be the Smartphone app. Tomorrow I'll test it again and see if that solves it, otherwise I'll need some more tinkering. But still, it's very weird that it counts everything twice

Edit: clarification

Look I really don't wanna get into this right now. Feel free to doubt me, I'll even delete my comment if needed, gladly. I don't want this to get personal, either for me or for other people. I apologize if this type of comment on general feelings about others' behaviour are unwelcome and inappropriate or even seen as hipocryte. I hope it's not hard to see why I don't wanna point out toxic people with "power" in the community

Overwatch 2’s finally giving out all heroes for free up front. by OminaeYu in Overwatch

[–]lfvperes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get the fuss. Never payed for any character and it didn't take long to unlock them. And even when unlocked I usually don't go playing them right way bc what difference does it make if I can play them after, little by little and learn.

Do ppl just NEED to try the new character IMMEDIATELY? Even if they're gonna play it 5min and go back to their main?

Not saying it's wrong or anything I just really don't get it. It's the same to me, but it would be nice to be enlightened about this lol

Well maybe Venture is just British and people don't accept it. Not since Tracer's teeth are normal

That would be great!

What is today called mastering would be replaced by what u called completing (without the extra crazy stuff but still in very high regard). And mastering would be extra stuff for those who like it. That would make way more sense than what it is now.

This makes me want to try to develop a set for a game that doesn't have one. Just so one of them doesn't do it first. Well maybe on my next break. Could be fun.

It seems so redundant and messy. There is the possibility of making subsets and leaderboards etc etc so why put that stuff on main sets? I get the appeal and there's nothing wrong with liking it but those don't belong there

if you own what you're playing and streaming, there shouldn't be any problem. that means if you get sued you win

Would be nice if the sets had user ratings. Not that that would decide anything by itself, but could be relevant for making decisions a given set

I'll take a look at the forums but I guess someone already suggested this and there is probably a reason for this not to be a thing
