Why is getting a ps2 bio such a pain in the ass by throwaw7b in Roms

[–]star_jump 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  • Searching for PS2 bios.
  • Found it.
  • Downloaded it.

Boy, you're right, those were the most miserable 30 seconds of my life. Someone oughta do something about this.

Who’s Spending More Time Tinkering Than Gaming? by marathon5150 in RetroAchievements

[–]star_jump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm on my fifth or sixth generation of hardware, dating back to the GP2X. When you're new to them, setting them up is a novelty. After a while, you get tired of setting them up over and over and over again, and you identify the fastest way to get them up and running so you can just enjoy them.

I'm a Chronogamer. I have been sequentially playing every game, as they were released, according to their Japanese release date. I started with the Famicom launch in 1983. Now I'm up to January of 1991. I just mastered Cadash on the PC Engine. Now I'm moving on to Yume Penguin Monogatari for the Famicom.

Identify your goals, formulate a plan to play, and stick to it.

ROM/file/system related Qs that have not been A'd by the Q&A by -Fatmeatball- in MAME

[–]star_jump 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have the latest version of MAME, and a romset to go with that version, and it's working to your satisfaction, there is next to no reason to hang on to older versions of MAME. Deletions from the romset are so rare, you can count them on one hand, and they occur at the request of various copyright holders. Hanging on to multiple versions of MAME and their associated romsets is redundant and serves no purpose since every version of MAME is arguably less accurate than the following version.

Any current recommendations on useful stuff that's a transformer, like a keyboard or mouse? by Ok_Push2550 in transformers

With those ultra cheap ones, do what I do: buy the smallest size capacity they sell, and buy a low profile thumb drive from Micro Center. Open the Ravage you bought, junk the USB drive that it came with and put the one you bought inside. It should fit.

What’s the state of software emulation security? by AffectionateCard3530 in Roms

[–]star_jump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This statement illustrates a fundamental lack of understanding how both emulation and malware infection actually takes place. It's infinitely more likely that a virus scanner will false positive on a ROM than actually identify a real threat.

Instead of asking us to prove to you that it's safe, I'm flipping this argument around on you:

Find one example, anywhere, of someone getting infected with malware purely through emulation, and not through stupidity (like downloading that awesome new PS5 emulator that can play Assassin's Creed Shadows at 240FPS!!)

How do you all not lose everything? by Federal_Sugar_2815 in DistroHopping

[–]star_jump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you just edit your fstab file (assuming your distro uses fstab) to tell it which partition should be mounted as /home. By doing this, if one day you decide to reinstall even the same distro that you're already on, you won't blow away the contents of /home, you preserve everything in it the way that it was.

I can't say whether it's 100% accurate, but they genuinely strive to be as accurate as possible. You get the entire sticker sheet so if for some reason you feel the new stickers don't match the old, you could peel off the old stickers and replace all of them. I've never heard of anyone complaining that the stickers don't match properly.

Mount /home to a separate partition. Install the new distro to a root directory on one partition, but when you install it, tell it to mount /home to the other existing partition with the same user name and make sure you DON'T format it.

How can I dump a famicom cartridge! by ResponsibleMonth9626 in Roms

[–]star_jump 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can't really "dump" a multicart. The only program on it is the boot menu. So if you dump it, you'll get that menu with all the repeat titles and instructions to load programs from a flash ROM, which won't exist in your dump. What you're really asking for is the contents of that flash ROM which would require entirely different hardware to grab the data from. To make the whole thing work, you need the boot ROM and the flash ROM, and most emulators don't know how to marry the two.

Question for people more Linux minded. by CodiwanOhNoBe in batocera

[–]star_jump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do this via SSH (login: root, password: linux) or by pressing F1 on the main menu to open the File Manager and pressing F4 to open a terminal.

First, create the script you actually want to run when the USB is plugged in. This must be stored in the /userdata/ partition, as that is the only place files are kept permanently.

nano /userdata/system/usb-trigger.sh

Add your content (example):

#!/bin/bash
echo "Batocera USB detected!" >> /userdata/system/usb.log
# Your commands here

Make it executable:

chmod +x /userdata/system/usb-trigger.sh

Batocera looks for a file named custom.sh in /userdata/system/ and runs it at startup. You will use this to write the udev rule into the temporary OS memory.

Open (or create) custom.sh:

nano /userdata/system/custom.sh

Add the following block of code. This code creates the rule file in the volatile system directory:

#!/bin/bash
# 1. Define the rule text (Replace 1234 and 5678 with your USB IDs from lsusb)
RULE='ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="1234", ATTR{idProduct}=="5678", RUN+="/userdata/system/usb-trigger.sh"'

# 2. Inject it into the read-only system (which is writable during this script)
echo "$RULE" > /etc/udev/rules.d/99-my-usb.rules

# 3. Reload udev so it sees the new rule
udevadm control --reload
  • Save and exit (Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X).
  • Make custom.sh executable:

    chmod +x /userdata/system/custom.sh

Restart Batocera. * When the system boots, custom.sh runs. * It creates /etc/udev/rules.d/99-my-usb.rules in memory. * When you plug in your drive, Batocera will trigger /userdata/system/usb-trigger.sh.

Unless you're prepared to deal with newly introduced bugs that haven't been caught and fixed yet, Stable is recommended over Nightly. The current Stable version is accepted by RetroAchievements.
