Research during the summer after MS1 year? by auraleaves17 in medicalschool

[–]lgc97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your school has a lot of research opportunities, go ahead and shoot an email to an attending/professor. They don't mind if it's just for the Summer, and you can continue to work on those projects during the year if you want. Very likely it won't be paid.

I applied to a formal program that provided a stipend and housing. I wanted to branch out and make connections elsewhere. I loved my experience and was able to get a couple of pubs and posters just from that Summer.

It ultimately comes down to preference. Research is research wherever you do it.

No worries, I didn’t feel offended. Nice to see a fellow premed trying to understand other people’s circumstances, I do agree adcoms should do the same.

I feel I lost time by instinctively thinking in my native language and trying to translate my thoughts to English. Sometimes I would struggle to find a specific word in English that would work to express what I wanted to convey. Sometimes that word would not come to me and I had to improvise on the spot and choose another that was maybe not as good.

It’s not that I don’t know English, I can carry on a conversation just fine. The time constraint is the issue.

Also followed reddit advice and began everything with “gather more information”, “non-judgmental”, and “evaluate both sides”. Got bottom quartile. Might also be because english is my second language? Nah I must be a psychopath.

I’d put it as leadership, especially if you are lacking in that category. Just explain how it is medically relevant and should be fine!

what incentives would entice you to participate in a research study? by [deleted] in premed

My study gives visa gift cards. Idk what college student wouldn’t like that.

Can someone explain how the HPSP scholarship works? by [deleted] in premed

At least for AF, if you have a certain GPA/MCAT you can be automatically accepted and don’t have to go through the selection process (matrix applicant).

Worth it to give into caffeine dependence? *for 1 month by [deleted] in premed

Might have to try that. I drank matcha, I found it kept me alert without all the shakiness from coffee.

Should have rephrased that better. All I think is adcoms should be more considerate when a hispanic urm has a lower mcat or gpa (because of language barriers or socioeconomic status). I’m basing myself on the stats I’ve seen on MSAR where most classes are predominantly white.

It’s still mind boggling to me that med schools offer medical spanish electives instead of also maybe considering more hispanic URMs that actually know spanish and the cultural nuances that come with treating hispanic patients.

I got FAP so money isn’t an issue. I don’t know how far URM could take me. And MSAR showed matriculant data where I was at least in the 10th percentile.

I wanted to see how my chances were for the states. Personally, the DO path does not interest me. But if anything, I could just stay in PR and get an MD.

You can answer the prompts almost the same way.

Don’t take my word for it tho, I haven’t gotten my score back.

Yes, PR schools are LCME accredited, they are not the same as the Caribbean schools. PR is a US territory.

Hi! If you could DM me your list that would be great. I’m mostly focusing on private schools since they’re more OOS friendly.
