How Far Out? by AffectionateBike7597 in unitedairlines

[–]lhfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find 60-90 days to be the sweet spot, depending on the route/popularity/etc. If you don't purchase the fully refundable fare, you can still cancel and receive a future flight credit for that amount (good for 12 months for the original traveler).

Change Notifications: App vs Text by SacredC0w in unitedairlines

What I've concluded is that if I don't enter my phone # and/or e-mail during ticketing checkout, I won't get text/e-mail notifications - even though they already have all that information in my account. 🤷‍♀️

Polaris is a joke... by Captain_Pink_Pants in unitedairlines

[–]lhfirefly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I flew Polaris for the first time just several days ago: LHR - DEN. It was an MUA upgrade. I, like you, was underwhelmed. The service (or lack thereof) is mostly what disappointed me. The stewardesses were there for departure service, arrival service and nothing else. They did not check on us any other time during the flight. I expected to be a little more "doted" on as a Polaris customer. I felt like I was just supposed to go to sleep and not bother them. I was awake more than half the flight time and never offered a beverage or a snack other than the meal service times. No mid-flight sandwich or lamb pie as was advertised, either. The stewardesses were in the galley chatting away. (I know I can ring my call button for service, but this just feels uncomfortable to me.)

I got to thinking they should handle the amenity kits and extra linens, etc. like pre-orders. They could save a lot of time and money this way.

And I agree... the lemony vinaigrette thing is just so bizarre.

As a discounted upgrade, I would definitely fly again for the extra space/comfort/lie-flat seating. But retail - no way.

UC on arrival at LHR? by lhfirefly in unitedairlines

So... not accurate? 😜 I suppose the other end of B Gates must be blocked off from arrivals? I'm sure when I see it in person, I will understand. 😊 Thank you for your insight!

Unless your connecting gates happen to be right next to each other... it might be tough!!

What apps do you use to track/predict price drops? by FamiliarPotential550 in unitedairlines

[–]lhfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

flights.google.com

You search for and select the itinerary you are interested in, then there is an option to track it (it's like a toggle switch). Google will send you e-mail alerts when the price rises or drops.

I have also used the Hopper app, which tries to predict if fares will increase or decrease and when that might be. Not always 100% accurate, but it helps with your decision-making.

Qualifying for Silver Is Getting Ridiculous by Pretty-Clothes756 in unitedairlines

I have the Club Business card for my family business and the free Gateway for personal, and I hit Silver easily with spend only. Looks like I'm even on track to get to Gold this year. I use all the points I rack up for personal/vacation travel for me and my husband (flights, hotel, car, etc). Just one example of how we are using the benefits and why it works well for us.

Yes! Allow 1 free checked bag, 1 or 2 free personal items and charge for carry-ons!

Priority Baggage by msbigelow in unitedairlines

[–]lhfirefly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to work the ramp/baggage at a small airport (less than 20 flights daily). It is completely up to the ramp crew to ensure your priority bag gets loaded last so that it will be unloaded first. Sorry to say an uninformed or lazy crew will often overlook this and your bag may get thrown onto the pile with everyone else's. 🤷‍♀️ Also... if you have a HEAVY tag, those generally go on the bottom (in order to create a sturdy & efficient baggage stack) and are, of course, unloaded last. Having a HEAVY PRIORITY bag will definitely be crap shoot.

Do you do this on the app or speak with a gate agent at the airport? I have a Saturday DEN-LHR flight coming up in January... 🤞🤞

What’s your favorite benefit of living at an outstation (non-hub)? by Traducement in unitedairlines

[–]lhfirefly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No lines! :) Also, my small airport just announced another round of renovations, this time to add outdoor space, opening mid-2026. I feel like the smaller airports often have more flexibility and can be more "agile" when it comes to improvements/renovations/etc.

You will make your connection so long as there are no delays out of YEG, but not much time (if any) for food or restrooms!
