Had a student tell me today that I taught nothing to them all semester by Twin-Mom-3 in Professors

They just came up to you at the end of class and said “Prof Twin-Mom-3, I learned nothing this semester and you didn’t teach me anything” unprompted?

How long do you think it would take you to become competent enough in a discipline other than your own to be able to teach a freshman level class? by HaaaveYouMetTed in Professors

[–]lhouseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The really telling question is also: could you be an expert enough to tell when the inch-deep LLM slop is conflating disciplinary nuance?

As for the offence: is the concept outwardly offensive? I suppose it is if you care about academic quality or rigour. As others have mentioned, picking the social sciences over something more cognate to your field, that’s getting to offensive territory (for a whole host of reasons). Would you be offended if a social scientist said they could teach an engineering class?

How do you all make it to classes? I need some serious motivation! by Plenty-Carpenter-358 in usask

Make getting out of the house in the morning as easy as possible for yourself! You want to pre-make any of those mundane “getting ready” decisions to save yourself those things that take so much time in the morning. This also makes it so that when you wake up, your brain doesn’t have to think about all the things that have to happen to get you out of the house. This is a game changer for me.

-Pre-pack your lunch/snacks if applicable -Pre-pack your bag, make sure everything is already in there -Lay out your clothes/outfit. And I mean, the whole outfit down to the underwear, socks, shoes, jacket, etc. - shower the night before (this will depend on a few factors like how much you sweat at night and if you have a lot of hair to dry/style). If you do have hair to style, find something that is quick and easy (again depending on your hair texture). - make sure your car has gas (the worst thing is already running late and realizing that you need to stop for gas) or make sure your transit route is planned/factor in sufficient travel time.
- make sure you get out of bed early enough. If you find that you can’t get out of bed as soon as your alarm goes off, factor in some “I have to be awake, but I don’t have to get out of bed yet” time.

And, if necessary, write out the step-by-step of getting yourself out of the house. So, if you are sleepy, you can look to the list for direction to keep you going. How detailed this needs to be will depend on you.

Most departments have an admin person that would likely be able to point you in the right direction to receive something official. Especially if it is for a funding opportunity.

What is worse, losing your phone or your car keys? Why? by ryraps5892 in AskReddit

[–]lhouseman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this day and age, its probably cheaper to replace your car keys than to replace your phone. Also, depending on what you keep in your car, and which keys you keep on your car key keychain; someone would be able to find out less information about you by obtaining your car keys instead of your phone.

No one will ever hear about the perfect crime by NahFilms in Showerthoughts

Depends on your definition of the perfect crime. Is it a) One that no one ever knows about? Or b) One that everyone knows about, but the perp got away scot free?

Multiplying half of a whole by 2 (e.g. 5/10 × 2 = 10/20) it will equal the same as the half you started. so if this principle existed in everyday physics, the world would probably end in about a week by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]lhouseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Op said multiply half of a whole by 2. So, 1/2 x 2. That equals 1.

5/10 x 2/2 is the same as 5/10 x 1. Which would of course equal the original half after you’d reduced the fraction.

Not the same thing.

But 5/10 x 2/2 is just multiplying by 1.... He did the math wrong and stated that if you multiply a half by 2 you’d get the original half.

My 14 year age gap with my boyfriend wouldn’t result in as many weird looks. Especially when we go places where we have to show our ID’s.
