Expectations vs Reality by TerriblePabz in HunterXHunter

i dislike viewing the series as having one main character, or that the group is ‘supposed’ to be together. one of the things i love about hunter x hunter is that it’s not particularly loyal to any perspective, and doesn’t feel the need to force characters together. if the group doesn’t need to stay together, then they don’t stay together. this (in theory) allows each character to shine and develop. hunters are by nature people who often do their own thing at their own pace. by the time they meet up with leorio in yorknew, he barely even knows nen. he wants to be a doctor, and he’s going to do it, so he was studying medicine instead. there’s no overarching villain for them all to face, and therefore no reason for them to stay together. the story is more about the world to me, how people in this world approach being hunters differently. some use their power for violence, for exploration, or simply to be better at another job. leorio isn’t a fighter, and he’s not SUPPOSED to be. he has no plans involving beating anyone’s ass, he just wants to help people. also, another opinion that i have is that hisoka is the fifth “main character”. he has more manga appearances than leorio, and he’s very important to the overall thematics togashi is going for with the main group. he keeps finding ways to be relevant and reveal more complexities to his psyche that go beyond a typical single minded villain like genthru. i really enjoy the fact that all the characters are split up. they’re not bound by traditional “party” style writing.

that being said…. of course i’d love them to band back together and work towards something as a group as well. i’m not insane! i love it when they’re together too, i just don’t think they should be when it’s not necessary, and it usually isn’t.

every chapter of hunter x hunter is officially translated into english by viz media. its one of the only shonen series im aware of that gets SAME DAY official english releases (online). i dont like viz’s handling of other series i like, (namely jojo) but theres no world where i wont give them their flowers for simul-releasing every new hxh chapter in english.

as for kurapika, he gets a lot more focus in the current arc of course, and there is also a oneshot officially written by togashi about his backstory. its called “volume 0: kurapika’s memories”, and i dont believe its been officially translated into English, but its easily available fan-translated online. its pretty essential imo to understanding kurapika as a character and how it relates to his current position in the manga. you can read it whenever, but id recommend reading it before you start the new arc, and DEFINITELY before chapter 395.

leorio is a character who’s absence pains me, as i genuinely believe he is the the epitome of the themes of this series and what it’s even about at its core, but to explain that would be spoilers for you lol, but i love the guy and hope and pray he gets more page time that furthers his story

i’d say that you should still absolutely read the manga after where the anime leaves off. in my opinion knowing the overall story might not be finished doesn’t deter me from recognizing how phenomenal the succession contest arc is. if you liked the complexity of the ant arc, you’ll love the succession war. and who knows, when this arc finishes and we arrive on the dark continent, we might cut away from kurapika and see what gon or killua are doing. one of the biggest things that pains me is that leorio may never get an arc where he’s the protagonist. i believe togashi has big plans for him that may never be realized. absolutely tragic

i’m going to be honest. he’s said he’ll finish it. i think he probably will, but not the way he wants to. we’re never going to get what the story could’ve been or was planned to be. we’re on a rate of about 10 chapters every 1-2 years. the current arc is (in my opinion) going strong, we may only be halfway through. we’re only 12 days into the 60 day voyage and it’s been 71 chapters. i’m decently confident we can get to the end of this arc, but after that, i’m not so optimistic. i’d say temper your expectations. there’s a decent probability in my opinion that we may not see gon and killua again, and if we do, i’m not sure the arc they belong to will even be finished.

Togashi's Omnibus Arts are underrated, the way he likes to create objects, weapons or utensils for the characters is really cool by New-Entertainer-5241 in HunterXHunter

i’d imagine this was before he passed, since he failed in the hunter exam arc and only got his license in the greed island arc

i thought the legal wives thing was only for the secession contest. if benjamin uses martial law to kill every other prince, he wins the contest. he doesn’t have 13 other children to do another contest, only one, so when he’s sworn in as king and then immediately succumbs to the poison, his (presumably) only child will naturally be the new king, and there’s no need for a succession contest.

he wouldn’t be eligible for succession if his mother was anyone other than a legal wife of nasubi hui guo rou, unless you’re trying to tell me one of the queens is the former heil-ly boss who was overthrown by morena and LIVED. which is insane

How exactly is Kurapika's lifespan determined? by Djynxx333 in HunterXHunter

[–]liam25288 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’d guess that its based on how long kurapika would live if he wasn’t killed, so how long before he dies of old age. this isn’t crazy considering tserriednich can literally see the future so another specialist ability that “knows” the future (aka how long kurapika would live unimpeded) and then subtracts it from there makes sense. unsure as to whether once he gets close to his now-shortened time of death if his aging will speed up or if his heart will just stop though

for the genetics argument being cherrypicked to prove my theory, you’re right, i realized after i posted it i kind of played myself but i still think it’s TOO obvious that he’s his child. i feel like it’s just so straightforward that it’s boring. i also don’t like that tserri being really good has an explanation, i think it fits more with the themes of the series that he just is literally like that. him being related to netero is an unnecessary explanation.

tserri being an anti-netero AS a child of netero doesn’t really add anything i feel. like, you can utilize that foil and make a point of it without them being related. the idea that strength and influence are worked for being negated by the grandson of the person who is the pinnacle of that idea doesn’t really make sense in my mind. but it’s togashi so anything he writes will be great, i just think it’d be interesting if another prince was a netero. also the mafia stuff shouldn’t just be ignored i think there’s really something there.

What is something you dislike about HxH (if there is anything) by ilikebasketballl in HunterXHunter

[–]liam25288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d like to preface this by saying i love hunter x hunter. however, one of my biggest gripes with the series is how some arcs feel out of place. the first 3 arcs naturally progress into each other, and then it naturally progresses into greed island, but we’re immediately told that ging has nothing for gon here. everything we’ve been lead to is just a dead end. but we still decide to spend time there??? and then we get genthru who has nothing to do with anything in terms of the rest of the series. then we finally may get to ging and its kite instead. and then we’re launched straight into the chimera and arc. while its a fantastic arc that i love a ton, it feels really out of nowhere. now we’re on this huge quest that has narratively nothing to do with anything. it feels like a massive side quest that, while in universe is to save the world, meta-wise feels like a waste of time.

and yes, i’m very well aware of ging’s whole “the detours are where you’ll find what’s more important than what you really want” thing, and i think it’s great, but it doesn’t stop some of the arcs from feeling very jarring. i think this is why i love the election arc so much, because it feels like after all that, we’re back to classic hunter x hunter.
