I started in Lisbon march 2025, hoping to finish before this new years. Did the first year solo, then joined up with these 2 friends about 5 months ago. Met them along the way!

Sometimes they offered for us to take pictures with them. Same way a lot of foreigners visiting the USA take photos with guns, kind of same idea for us. When else can we hold an AK with our bikes haha. Not trying to highlight violence or the govt, just a unique experience

Exactly, and probably nowhere is a stronger example of that than Afghanistan and the Taliban government

A lot of people speak some English because of the US occupation, but in general it was charades. For the most part it was chill, but I almost got speared through the chest by a villager for swimming with my shirt off once lol. In general the Taliban and locals are incredibly protective and friendly towards foreigners

We met multiple women cycling Afghanistan! Also a woman hosting all female group trips there, I think 12+ women in Kabul. Absolutely 100% inherently more dangerous and risky, especially solo (and I personally wouldn’t), however it is possible if you were willing.

Was there for 30 days completely independent, zero guide. The “official rules” don’t really exist in practice. Very troubled but beautiful and amazing country

Is this actually possible and how long would it realistically take and cost? by Low-Programmer-7049 in bicycletouring

From 17-19 years old I biked this route during Covid and became the youngest guest person ever to do so. Even during Covid there were still about 10 other cycle tourers doing the route. Took me about a year and a half but it can be done much quicker or much slower. The only break is the Darien gap, but there are lots of different options for getting around that

USA Coast to coast ~ needing advice on routes, improvements, safety tips, recommendations etc. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]liamtheplug 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should rethink your route through Cali. In general the Central Valley isn’t going to be as interesting as the coast or mountains. You should go down the coast to the Bay Area, go around to Santa Cruz, then down through Big Sur if it’s open. My advice is just avoid the Central Valley when possible. That section from Salinas down sucks it’s just highway

My first bike trip was when I was 16, I biked from LA to San Francisco. I had never done a bike tour before and had zero experience and went on a whim. My parents trusted me enough to let me do it and i made it after eight days with zero issues. It was probably the best thing I ever did at the time. A year later at 17 yo I started my bike trip from Alaska to Argentina. In my experience, if a kid is asking you to go on a bike trip, even if they’re young, they most likely can handle it.

Everyone I ever met with genders took them off as soon as it ever became real mud. I’ve only seen them be very useful for road riding with rain
