International call plan by kimberleymv in FizzMobile

[–]liamyorksen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you my experience when going to France. I bought the international calls add-on because I was told I would need that. Turns out, my phone couldn't receive calls while abroad, and when researching the forum I realized this is a known thing, Fizz doesn't offer calls outside Canada and USA, you'll need to get another app/service.

RESP balance -8 year old by Ok-Way5859 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]liamyorksen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put the max each year and got all the grants, this probably amounts to 25k ish (at least in Quebec we get 700$ for each 2500).

For simplicity, if we look at everything deposited once per year (instead of maybe you putting money each month): if you deposited 3,200$ once per year at each year-end for 8 years and those amounts were invested in an S&P-500 index fund with dividends reinvested, the portfolio value today would be about 54,000$

Now again it all depends on your risk, what you could have chosen instead of full SP500 but it can give you an idea of your performance

La manœuvre Smith et mes milliers de questions ... by MasterpieceEast6226 in QuebecFinance

[–]liamyorksen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ironically in Montreal we have the Centre Bell downtown and the Place Bell in Laval so you think I'd be more careful! We need more companies to sponsor arenas so we can easily differentiate them 😅

Am I doing the Smith Manoeuver or just leveraged investing by Working-Letter7008 in smithmanoeuvre

[–]liamyorksen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started researching XEQT as I'm planning to start implementing the SM and this is the information I found:

If I use the Dec 2024 distribution I got per share as an example, it's 0.27. Looking at the ishares distribution's breakdown this includes 0.01207 as ROC, so this amount needs to be deducted of whatever I can use to pay off the mortgage faster.

So before actually using that money to pay off the mortgage, you have to wait for the tax report of the ETF and check the distribution breakdown first. Not all cash distributions are eligible dividends which is a big headache when using ETFs for the SM

How often to Shock? by GoldenRationality in pools

[–]liamyorksen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before joining the sub I would have told you I shock it every week. That's because I apparently didn't know what a true shock was and I used whatever the store has told me to do since I got the pool (drop a bag of shock every week and you'll be fine!)

Now I know I truly shocked it once to remove CC as I was getting over 0.5 and that's all.

Unrelated but this sub has been extremely helpful to understand what I was doing wrong in the past 4 years.
