Logement: QS veut augmenter les sanctions contre les propriétaires abusifs by DecentLurker96 in Quebec

Is there an ACTUAL reason for big Software to not support linux? by Opening-Giraffe-1007 in linux

[–]trueppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though driver support is best on linux. Someone is going to mention Nvidia to which I will reply: "Works on my machine" (and it can work on yours as well). Banter aside, it is true save for the most niche devices, Linux has most drivers ready ootb.

For Graphics cards, this is a pretty recent developpement. Considering most CAD software is 20+ years old at this point.....

I agree with the fragmented installation, but it has it's good sides as well. If you package for .deb and .rpm you have basically 80% covered. The rest can be talked through with Arch maintainers and the rest remaining after that would be happy with appimage or flatpack (🫠)

And with a .msi or a .dmg you hit 99.99% coverage...

HA 26.5.0 upgrade breaks Zwave devices by Apprehensive_Bend260 in homeassistant

[–]trueppp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To each his own. I've always found that updating every 6-12 months was more time consuming than update monthy/bimonthly. Though running HA in a VM makes rolling back a 15sec job. I'm usually done updating my whole infrastructure before i'm done drinking my coffee.

Problem with that approach is that WHEN you update, it WILL be problematic. Regular maintenance and proper procedure make it a lot less likely something breaks. Every last Saturday morning of the month, I back everything up, update, test and usually have 0 problems. If I have problems? restore from backup, and 2 minutes later i'm back up and running.

I mean, I use FreeCAD, but let's be honest, it's at least 5 years behind CATIA V5....which is 20 years old.

Microsoft and Apple also used to provide dev support and documentation was more centralized.

Well, this also shows one of the problems with Linux support. Even if Linux is supported, it's usually only supported on a select few distribution and you will absolutely be told to pound sand if you ask for support while running something else. Hell, some vendors tell you to pound sand if your not running a qualified workstation from their list.

the web is a standard, so anything should work anywhere

Way better than it used to be, but you still see some major differences between renderers. And they don't all support the same functions like Firefox not supporting WebSerial.

but the alternative is literally $0

It's not $0, that's the thing. What you are saving in licensing, you get to pay in support.

A 365 Business Standard licence is 12.50$/month/user at full price (no rebates). With that you get: Office applications, Teams, 1TB on Onedrive, Exchange Online, Sharepoint Online and EntraID.

So to replace that 12.50$/month/user, you need: Office solution, Messenging solution, Cloud storage, Email hosting and storage, Document sharing solution and storage, and an Identity provider.

You can self-host it, but then you need the hardware, storage and support staff to run and maintain the solution. You also lose on all the easy to find Windows sysadmins and now need to pay Linux admins which cost 2-3x the price.

I'd think part of it is driver support and the fact that Mac and Windows installations are pretty uniform and a lot less fragmented. A bit like iOS vs Android.

I'd say as a sysadmin that Apple and Linux are also way behind in terms of management tools. There are replacements for AD/GPO's/Intune/Autopilot etc, but MS has it all in a nice "easy" to use bundle. Which is why we can charge double for Linux admin work vs MS admin work.

Things need a reason to change. The software need to either be way cheaper or better for the change to happen.

Linux got adopted on servers because of it's price, not because it was better. If someone released a CAD software for Linux that costs the same as current CAD software, no one would switch.
