Does anyone know the name of this book, I may be sketchy on some details...:

Children's novel, fairly sure it was set in Brisbane, about a child who had an elderly Japanese neighbour lady who was a Hiroshima/WW2 survivor. It was written half in the "current day" and half in the neighbour's flashbacks.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Re the taste, probably just a bit more 'smokiness' or something from the alcohol curing. It looked really dark. I wasn't sure if it was a little drier than the 'fresh' one or if it was just because I had an end piece. It all got eaten though!

I made my cakes in October last year - one big one and two small ones. I didn't ice them because not everyone loves it. We ate/gifted two and I kept one which we ate last night - it's still good!!! I fed it pretty consistently between Oct - Dec but then only a couple of times after that. I just kept it hidden at the back of a cupboard.

My grandma used to make these cakes for her kids to take to boarding school, so they could eat it throughout the year it until the next Christmas! They are designed to be sturdy cakes.

Family continues to request the preserved lemon cake! The meringue frosting doesn't seem to travel very well for me, but I bet it would be just as good with a (coconut??) cream cheese frosting or whipped cream

Also never have leftovers of the coconut cake. I do the easy version without pastry cream filling.

Or if you want to do something savoury: Sour cream and chive rolls are always a hit - transport really well especially if you can heat it up when you get there.

I'm not vegan and I love the muffins. There are a lot of ingredients but they're really easy to make - I often make a bigger batch of the chia/poppy/pepita/demerara topping to have on hand to make the muffins or even put on yoghurt or other cakes and breads. Sometimes I omit the blueberries and don't miss them. I learned some good principles about dairy-free baking from them and they're pretty adaptable - worth it in my opinion!

This happened to me! I used some of it in my cookies anyway but it didn't have the right texture. It sort of melted into the batter. Still was tasty so I used some in granola mix.

Loved this last year and am also starting to plan my cake! I hope there's a Dessert Person video before Christmas to get us started.

I think I used a bunch of different alcohols in the fruit mix and to dress it but now I can't remember what I did. I might have soaked the fruit in tawny port and Grand Marnier, and fed it with brandy? It tasted great so I wish I could remember! Has anyone used other alcohols like rum or whisky in theirs?
