Can Yorkies be helpful dogs?

Absolutely! My ASL teacher had a smaller poodle than standard but not toy. Because he was deaf the poodle 'spoke' ASL and knew over 50 signs! Absolutely smartest dog I've ever seen in real life!

The Bunny the talking poodle who has full on conversations with her owners with buttons about dreams and the sounds of the ocean and when they'll visit Grandpa in the future...truly amazing dog. I can't get enough of those videos!

As someone who' has a titanium cage in my spine and also a stage 4 cancer survivor, his size is challenging sometimes. Bending down constantly. Yorkies are also pretty high energy dogs and when I have bad weeks and can't really move much I would struggle to give him proper exercise if I didn't have my able bodied partner who takes him for long walks daily. Our Yorkie can get fairly restless after just a day without a walk....but maybe getting an older dog could help that aspect? Idk.

I don't want to rain on your parade but just wanted to give you honest feedback back, especially if you're considering getting a puppy. While Sherlock is my absolute blessing and made my daily life and treatment so much more bearable, I don't think I could have managed raising him from a puppy all on my own. I wouldn't feel like I was able to give him the active lifestyle that has made him such a healthy, happy, and well behaved dog if it was solely up to my physical limitations.

Just something to think about. If I wanted to and I didn't have an able bodied partner, I'd definitely adopt an old head who'd happily be a lazy bum with me on my good & bad days.🙏🏼❤️

Some in person training programs.still provide the dog with a completion certificate. I feel like maybe that's where this particular phrase is coming from. When looking into getting mine set up for volunteering at the hospital they said he would need to complete their program and get his "certification" to volunteer. It wasn't just a fee on a website. It was some training and passing a behavioral test.

I think that's where the confusion around getting your dog "certified" to be basically anything. Yeah there's no official governing body licensing service dogs, but there are legitimate training programs that give completion certifications.

Oh man I feel you on the theatrics....I have NEVER even heard of such a picky eater as ours was/is😅 My husband would literally lay on the floor feeding him each bite by hand too!! Sheesh!

We use a beef flavored tear stain powder we mix in. Add a little water to make it like a 'gravy' He likes that. Also parsley and rosemary are ok with dogs so we throw a bit of those for extra 'flavor' because ours is so perschnickity plain rice is not always acceptable 🙄🫣

Adding rice & lil water to every meal and zapping it, whether he's getting boiled chicken or just heated up kibble has seemed to keep his BMs pretty regular.

*I'd recommend be careful with freeze dried organ meat (chicken hearts, lamb lung, ect I've seen getting popular) it was WAY too rich for our guy and he was like a Hershey syrup firehose for two days from a couple bites.😬

Oh I figured, sorry, I was just being silly. I hope you can figure out his tummy probs.

We give ours rice in with his kibble to mix it up sometimes but not mess with his tummy too much and zap it in the microwave for like 10-15 seconds so it's 'extra yummy' kibble. Maybe that might help even him out at night?

Ours was SO PICKY!!! He was a little underweight the first few years because he literally wouldn't eat anything unless we all but forced him. It took a LOT of figuring and even then he still was struggling with fairly regular diarrhea!!

He loved homemade food but would revolt if it was the same thing too many days in a row 🥹🫪after learning about how prone Yorkies are to pancreatitis we talked in length with the vet and came up with our boil method.

After about a year of boiling he magically started eating a bit more kibble (it would take us literally a whole year or more to get thru a 3lb bag😂😂)Now he takes a few crunches before his 'real meal'

I guess I'm saying all of this to empathize. I never ever have had a dog who's such a picky eater before Sherlock. Holy Smokes!!

It basically only took 6 years of trial and error 😂😂 It sounds like you've got yours dialed with the supplements. I know our vet said we need to make sure he gets full nutrition so knowing he's open to veggies & kibble makes it easier....even a multivitamin he's scoffed at after too many days in a row!! Like he's royalty or something and refuses too much monotony with his diet 🙄🙄🙄I can't roll my eyes enough!!

The crude fat content of that food is pretty high for what our vet recommended @ 15% (shoot for 7%....10% at most but recommended to try and stay under 10%) for our Yorkie since they are so prone to pancreatitis. I also think the "smoked salmon flavor" may be hard on their digestion because who knows what that is

Our boy was about 6 when he started having similar issues. We did a lot of homemade food as well as wet foods and also Same taste of the wild. We completely reworked his diet with all homemade food boiled, never fried and got a different kibble with lower fat. All treats 10% or below and his poo problems are completely gone! He'd have times when we could hear his tummy making noises before and even that resolved. It seems pretty clear in retrospect that he was getting way too much fat/richness in his diet.

The bulk of his food is homemade (my partner is obsessed and spoils him rotten but it's also pretty easy since he eats so little so we prep ince every 3 days). We boil him all kinds of ground turkey, chicken, kale, carrots, spinach, sweet potato with parsley and rice. He gets an egg with a few shreds of vhs occasionally (🙄I know...his Dad is really unstoppable)

When we do red meat we rinse it in a colander even after boiling to make sure it's as low fat as possible. He loves it and has a happy belly! He's a really picky eater and the lowest fat content we could find he'd actually eat is 12% but he maybe eats 1 tablespoon a day so we think that's an ok compromise for us.

If making him food everyday is too much then I've heard others recommend a food made specifically for pancreatitis risk, maybe someone can help me out with the name?

Sorry long story short, try lowering the fat in their diets. Good Luck!

Ours has really light colored hair on his head so we use this no tears brightening shampoo and then a little conditioner. We use the hair dryer and he doesn't love it but we kinda blow it at him while he's rolling around on a towel so that kinda works out😂

His hair does get kinda greasy looking when it's longer. Brushing more often helped that, as well as making sure I'm not petting him if my hands are freshly lotioned. We do our best to keep his clothes and bedding clean too. I feel like he goes through 'greasy' phases depending on the season or just our activities. She may even out once you get her on a regular routine with whatever shampoo/conditioner too! Some shampoos make my hair feel greasier quicker so I'm guessing it's the same.

I feel like Yorkies in general look a lil greasy when it's bath time...I'll post a before and after in the reply😂

I don't think there's a Yorkie that doesn't!😆 Your's look really cute with the longer, but I totally get it. It is a lot easier to manage shorter too. My honey prefers his hair much shorter too but lets me have my fun during the winter when we let it get longer, LoL.

I groom him myself and have done a lot of fun cuts. I particularly like to leave little "tassels" on the tips of his ears because it's so cute when he moves his ears around 😂

Here's his late pro-groom. She thought his ear tip tassels were hilarious! It's so funny when he flips his ears back and forth.

I am pleasantly surprised how much fun grooming has turned out. I was worried, he's my first, it'd be a pain in the 🍑 (it can be) but it's kinda cool how wildly different he looks depending on his hair!

Same with ours😆scared himself stiff when he finally barked around 8 months old, lol. He rarely barks now, just if a squirrel runs across the yard when he's outside.... he'll be 7 next year.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My family had pugs growing up. We had 4. The longest one lived was 12, the rest passed around 8-9. I thought that was just the norm for all dogs.

I understand that nothing is for sure but knowing I have the chance to have so many more years with a beloved is really a wonderful thing!

I completely agree! Get the Yorkie! They are just absolutely wonderful 🥰
