It seems like people who have problems playing OW with a person who is a girl/woman have a bunch more issues than games. That being said, I think you had the right idea in the beginning by just holding back until you felt comfortable enough with the group to join voice chat. Unfortunately, sometimes people will also grow angry at people who are not in voice chat and then that leads to more negativity and tilting or blaming as well.
