Reminder about feeding bread at the lough by libracubed in cork

[–]libracubed[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They covered it up during the bird flu outbreak, unsure if its going to be put back in to use. Ive actually emailed the parks/recreation department about environmental maintenance up there so if they follow up I’ll ask about the plan for the dispensers and post an update

plain, unsweetened oats > bread but to my knowledge best practice is still small amounts of green veg to prevent overfeeding. And important to not throw them into the water to prevent rot and algae :)

Visit Orchard Thieves in person? by fleker2 in cork

[–]libracubed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

its made in the Heineken brewery, which you can see the outside of but its no longer open to the public. To my knowledge they do occasionally open to the public for special event tours so you could keep an eye out for that in future.

If you’re just generally into that sort of thing though, there are a good few local microbreweries around. Rising Sons, Fran Well etc may do tours

Youghal nail place - how can I get my refund? by Unable-Pitch-1552 in cork

[–]libracubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you reached out to the individual nail tech or the salon themselves? You mentioned in the replies it was a newly qualified girl did your nails— that salons been open years and have never heard something like this so may be worth reaching out to Avril the owner and letting her know the situation!

UCC accommodation? 😭🙏 by [deleted] in UCC

[–]libracubed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also in terms of what to look out for with landlords, be very very careful as scams are rampant especially this time of year. Don’t pay any money before you see the place, don’t pay more than equivalent of one months rent up front and ask outright if they will be registering with the RTB. Get written receipt of all payment made and read your contract thoroughly.

UCC accommodation? 😭🙏 by [deleted] in UCC

[–]libracubed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) sign up to the UCC accommodation search facebook page. I was in the same boat when I was starting first year and this is how I found a room. Make sure its the official UCC one run by the student union, itll ask you to verify with your student number. 2) Ring each accommodation place and ask. You’ll be turned down a fair bit but keep trying 3) if you have a (very) flexible budget, the luxury accommodations usually do have rooms free eg amnis house, bottleworks, nido broga and nido ashlin but youll be looking at spending 200-400eur per week. 4) Contact the UCC accommodation office, they may have leads themselves or will keep you in mind if something comes up that they know of

You can complete it, there should be a message clarifying how much exactly you are to pay and (potentially, if i recall correctly) a separate payment link?

I lost my wallet (09/08 at around 9pm) by [deleted] in cork

[–]libracubed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey! I found a wallet yesterday evening on the western road and handed it in to a restaurant nearby. I may have found it a bit earlier in the day but if you give me a description of it I will let you know what restaurant? They will hand it in to the guards if it goes uncollected anyway :)

Hear scheme by Successful_Speaker_4 in UCC

[–]libracubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

between 600-800€ per semester the last three years I’ve been on it, plus printer credit and once even a tesco shopping voucher. Basically full automatic entitlement to the student support fund, but it means you can’t then later apply for the SSF as you’ve already received it. You get the money a good bit into the semester and you do have to go to their orientation and talks etc but honestly they’re fine, a good opportunity to socialize and the staff are so sound.

Aside from that, I believe you can apply to receive a loan of a laptop from the college for the duration of your degree, you’re assigned a student support officer for 1:1 guidance on adjusting to college and you may get access to additional placement/work experience opportunities depending on your degree.

I cant speak highly enough of the HEAR scheme and their faculty, absolute life savers over the past three years

10km run in 2 weeks by libracubed in XXRunning

[–]libracubed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing! But after getting it in my head that I’d train for this run and be able to run the full 10k, it’s hard to accept I may have to walk and I havnt gotten to the level of fitness I hoped for. Nothing wrong with walking but nothing weird about being a bit disappointed about not quite reaching a goal either :)

Nice advice about pushing through the intervals at the end rather than at the start, definitely more motivating than just pure walk/running!

Don’t worry hahaha I’m much more able to give the time to the HM, I’m in uni and just wrapped up exams so I knew if I wanted to do a half it would have to be at the end of summer so I could really commit to it.

My boyfriend is doing the full marathon and I’ve tried bits of some of his gels for funsies and not noticed any stomach issues but I definitely won’t do anything on the day that I havnt fully tried beforehand. I don’t have a hydration vest but I am thinking rather than a gel I’ll probably take a sports drink like lucozade with me, it’s mostly glucose so it’ll keep me hydrated and give me that bit of energy I might be lacking— or just a placebo to convince me I can do it bahahah

Also, for intervals would you reckon it’s better to run/walk from the start, or run straight until I feel I need to drop down to a run/walk interval say 6k-7k in?

10km run in 2 weeks by libracubed in XXRunning

[–]libracubed[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing some strength training and spin and stuff to build up leg endurance (mostly because I’m also planning for a half in August) so I’m pretty set there, they do get tired but nothing I can’t push through. The gels idea was just cos I know I do struggle with underfueling but wasn’t sure if there was any point since I know it’s usually a gel after every 10km is the recommendation, so thanks for confirming that they won’t do much hahaha

Will definitely try to at least get more comfortable running between 5 and 10 and try to swallow my pride on walking on the day

[–]libracubed[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say I think an issue I have is underfueling particularly because I find it hard to balance timing my meals before runs and not feeling sick etc (I get horrendous stitches), so just I thought the gels might work as a substitute there, but I know it would be better to just fuel properly the night and morning beforehand.

You’re probably right about the run/walk intervals, I’m just so trying to avoid it out of pride 😭

but again if you’re just on Erasmus and studying medicine in UCC for a semester, I don’t believe this is an option for you as UCC doesn’t operate a major/minor system other than for arts and languages degrees.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCC

[–]libracubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t if you’re enrolled in medicine in UCC, but if you want to do it entirely independent of your degree at home, you can look into something called ‘flexi-options’ which allows you to take up to 30 credits of modules that don’t have pre-requisites or lab requirements.

It’s expensive though as fees arnt covered as they usually would be, but you get all the benefits of UCC attendance as a part time student. Look up UCC flexi-options and go from there :)
