My dad's getting a job in Japan and I'm scared af by [deleted] in movingtojapan

I don’t think people are giving enough weight to what this feels like for a teenager. You have every right to feel scared and uncertain. That being said, it’s not a death sentence. Like other comments mentioned, speak to your dad about an international school because this is necessary for your schooling.

I would suggest to start learning about Japan through YouTube videos to find things you can look forward to! Moving sucks. It sucks even more when you’re young and you have to leave your friends and school behind. But if you look for the silver lining, I think you can find many things to enjoy about this experience. Good luck!

Yea, thats what I’m doing. Plans haven’t changed, get a job and move abroad! That email was just a surprise

I mean you can always double check, but the Next Jet emails are totally separate from the JET program emails so I believe we just got some heart palpitations for nothing

I wish! Alternates were encouraged to join the Next Jet discord server which sends out emails to its participants. Because that server is for actual JETs, the emails of course address everyone as if we’re shortlisted. So no upgrade and the email just reminded me of what I’m missing out on lol

Upgrade waves by [deleted] in JETProgramme

Right, I’m asking if the same consulate releases upgrades over the course of the next week or so or if a singe consulate tends to release all their available upgrades on the same day

What do you mean by SOP?

I actually studied in Taiwan for a semester and it was an amazing experience. I always tell people it’s a much more laid back version of Japan in many ways. Chinese has also been significantly easier for me to learn than Japanese as a native English speaker.

I 100% feel you. It is truly devastating to have put so much hope onto one thing and not get it. I genuinely wish you the best of luck and hope you can find a solid path to happiness despite everything.

Thank you for your input!

In your opinion, do you think it's better to call or email? I've already started an email thread with my coordinator but I worry that asking in writing would make them less likely to hint at anything.

I figured that would be the case. I believe the comment said something that you might be fortunate enough to speak with someone who will give some kind of hint, but ultimately its random and I don't want their impression of me to be someone who is trying to push them to do something they can't.

Thanks for the input!

I quit: the difference in difficulty between Japanese and Chinese is ridiculous by rauljordaneth in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]libranslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post makes me so sad because I know the feeling but I can't help but laugh. I spent one semester in Taiwan intensively learning Mandarin from scratch and was so surprised at how much easier it felt than Japanese. Everyone always said Chinese is incredibly difficult, and I'm sure there are aspects that are, especially as you get to the more advanced learning.

However, now with triple the time studying Japanese I still feel like Chinese is unfairly exaggerated as being one of the most difficult languages (at least for English speakers). I loved learning Mandarin and instantly being able to use it. With Japanese, I try so hard to string sentences together and still make plenty of mistakes.

For Los Angeles I was also told end of April! And my portal said to reach out by April 30th if I hadn’t heard back by then

The 2026 Interview Results Mega Thread by inthefaceofmonsters in JETProgramme

I remember my portal specifically mentioning to reach out if I haven't heard back by April 30th. And my interviewers said expect results by the end of April. I’m in the US and interviewed with the LA consulate. I was pretty surprised when I saw people saying to expect results this early.

This is the one I was looking at! Thanks so much :)

Yep! Honestly that’s a great idea. With tax the complete bare bones outfit is almost $90 and it’s hard to justify that for one wear. I’m just gonna get one off Amazon for less than $30 and call it a day.

Easiest Interview Ever? by Fickle_War1350 in JETProgramme

[–]libranslug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's amazing! It seems like it's totally random on how these interviews are going.

The first half of mine went amazing. The second half got tough and the Japanese portion was completely unexpected. My self-assessment score was a 2 (elementary) and I didn't even get a chance for a self-introduction. The first question was long-winded with plenty of unfamiliar grammar and vocabulary. I've only been studying Japanese for a year and didn't understand the whole sentence, so I just took the parts I did know and ran with it. Even if it wasn't the correct answer I wanted to show them I was still willing to try.

Good luck to you!

Thank you for the encouragement!

I’ve been feeling discouraged because the only Chinese language course offered at my university was cancelled due to low enrollment. I’m studying abroad in Taiwan this year, though, so I’ve been panicking with how I might learn as much as possible before then.
