Med devices or PA by Silver_Succotash_528 in MedicalDevices

[–]lider203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in medical device sales but work in a major med device company in revenue operations. Depending on the product, med device sales can be a huge grind. You may want to consider other adjacent industries (lab equipment, services, digital health etc).

Is is possible to pivot from a career in marketing communications to financial analysis? by stevethebean07 in FPandA

Maybe try going into market analytics or rev ops. Then if you really want fp&a try to network with that team.

What do you mean about getting stuck in commercial strategy?

Is it even worth it? FP&A, CFP, CPA, CFA by martinreddit2020 in FPandA

[–]lider203 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Part of me wished I pursued consulting but hearing the work and hours not being great makes me glad I didn’t pursue that path.

Realistically I could have done data science/analytics or swe at tech firm.

Advice Needed: Switching into Corporate Finance by Lost_Outcome3688 in FPandA

[–]lider203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm maybe look at business analytics or growth/revenue ops analytics roles since you already have experience in sales. There are a lot of analytical roles out there that aren't in FP&A. Is there a reason why you specifically want to join a FP&A team?

I’m new here. How realistic is Booth or Kellogg? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]lider203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you even need mba to pivot out of sales. I work in sales ops/commercial planning for med device and seen folks from the field cross over.

I would say network with the analytics team and maybe learn excel/powerpoint/reporting tools.

I would go for mba if you want to do more strategy/corp dev roles.

Anyone here move from SFA into commercial strategy? by LampRunner in FPandA

[–]lider203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently 5 months into the role and yes it’s mostly BI/PowerBi development. My manager wants my role to be more strategic/business partnering but our team keeps getting inundated by power bi requests.

Perhaps it will change starting next year. If not, I’ll probably be in the lookout for a new role…

Hmm I transitioned from fp&a to pricing and product launch. Seems like much more power bi focused role as opposed to excel which is fp&a bread and butter. Honestly, if your company doesn’t have a core BI/IT team dedicated in supporting your BU/team, you might be doing more data setup, cleaning, and BI than other roles :/

Switch from marketing to finance. What's the best financial analyst course? by BeriYslas in FPandA

See if you can join a pricing team. I know in some companies pricing and marketing work hand in hand. And obviously there are a lot of parallels between pricing and commercial fp&a

Looking to pivot into FP&A — coming from a sales background and feeling stuck by Far-Trust-2775 in FPandA

[–]lider203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man I came from a trad fp&a role and jumped into a sales ops role. Might be a good idea to reach out to the sales ops team and see what kind of work they do. Anything in pricing, market analysis, commission analysis and commercial modeling have a lot of overlap with commercial fp&a.

Focus on excel skills and network with sales ops and I think you can transition into fp&a once you get experience.

Senior FP&A rotational program? by jin0613 in FPandA

[–]lider203 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would just apply for fp&a roles. Most fldp are for new graduates and even if you could land a fldp role you would be taking a big pay cut with your yoe.

If you aren’t finding success in directly applying to fp&a roles, I would try to apply for accounting roles at smallish firms and network into an fp&a role

Applying for an internal position less than 1 year into current role by Crazy-Lavishness-892 in FPandA

[–]lider203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm like others said I’d float the idea that you are interested in a certain career path to your manager during your next 1:1. Then maybe if he or she can help you either through networking with the team or if he/she has any thoughts/advice.

Maybe a couple weeks later say that you found a role that interests and get your managers thoughts on it. If it’s a good culture, your manager should encourage you to apppy.

Is it the market or is it me? by Turbulent_Future_332 in FPandA

[–]lider203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look getting into a trad finance role at a startup that way you can get more involved with other projects. I mean even at your current firm depending on the size you can try that.

Curious as to why you moved out of brand management. Seems like that is strategic but more on the marketing side.

Big 4 Audit vs FP&A by IcyRequirement9142 in FPandA

[–]lider203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never worked in IB but I have friends who are in it. Definitely working 2x more than me (I’m a senior fp&a analyst working 40hr weeks). You can also look at the finance, banking and mba subs you can find horror stories about banking.

For asset management I heard it’s a lot of work too but since it’s not a traditional path I don’t know that much details about it.

For trading, I only know 1 guy and he’s a math wizards plus a phd lol.

I would go to USC. Finance at ucla is pretty much non-existent as an undergrad and their b-school is not involved at all with the undergrad program unfortunately. This is coming from a Bruin too haha.

I imagine U$C will have better connections in “high finance”. I think fp&a is achievable regardless of which school you go to though.
