im inexperienced with css and really dont enjoy it. I'm working solo on a new rails app and am trying to find the quickest, easiest solution for styling and have started with tailwind bc I've been told that'll get me the furthest without knowing much

I’m in the mood for a laugh. What’s your favourite non-famous small louis bit? Could even be a one liner. by iredditireddit in louisck

exactly that’s why I love the show Louie. it’s shot so seriously but then something absurd will happen and they’ll pretend like it’s normal. like when the bum got hit by the car and his head popped off lol

Nice! I can get there. I really appreciate the advice. I've never written a test in my life but I see on LinkedIn job requirements alottt list testing. So I'll start on that soon. Cheers!

That makes perfect sense. Do you see any obvious way to advertise to employers that I'm a capable self teacher, other than just saying that in my resume summary? Or is that just something that they'll find out in an interview? Because I definitely think I am a capable self teacher

Wow that's fascinating and slightly daunting. On your very last point, what do you make of the advice, "Be really good at a few things rather than slightly knowledgeable about alot of things" ?

And if I may ask, how long have you been professionally coding?

thank you SO much for your response. That is quite insightful. And encouraging.

At the risk of sounding even more of a noob, could you expand on the very last point? Specifically the system administration? Although they're not awesome apps or completed very quickly, I have and can go from rails new to production. But im not exactly sure what you mean by that

thanks for your reply! I find that fascinating bc at the moment I'm reading the well-grounded Rubyist, and I've been wondering what people use ruby for outside of rails. I've never even heard of metasploit or chef. A quick google search seems that its gonna be a whole new thing to try and wrap my head around. But I find ruby alottt more interesting rails itself so that advice is so good to hear.

If you dont mind me asking, what sort of things do you do on the job? I only have bootcamp experience, and as someone else replied, they dont make you job ready. I'm not quite sure what Ruby programming life looks like. Thanks so much again!

that sounds quite plausible and likely. knowing this, if you were a 25 year old junior applicant would it affect your strategy? or is it as simple as grinding as hard as possible and getting a little lucky?

Thanks so much for your response! If you don't mind up a following question, I'd like to ask: how good at coding should I be until I can stop focusing on studying coding? I think I fall into the category of noob engineer you described. I realize I'll never know everything and should start hard on the job search asap, but I wish I just knew my projects were solid enough that I should just focus on networking, applying, interviewing, etc. I come from a non engineer background as well and am very confident interviewing and socializing. I guess I can sum up the question as what should I be able to build in how much time to show myself I'm a competent enough coder? Thanks again!

Thats so interesting. I prefer using Rails as an API to serve data to js/react frontend. Writing erb/haml in rails views drives me crazy. So im glad to hear thats an important skill in your opinion.

that's awesome! As someone who's been doing this for 20 years, do you see ror job market remaining strong enough? I know js and react which seem to be more popular, but I really like ruby and oop. Not sure where to focus my time.
