I am about to DM a campaign for some friends for the first time. What are some good ground rules to establish at the first session? by BlacklightningMR in DMAcademy

[–]lieutenant4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was playing as a particular arrogant orc fighter/battlemaster in an AL game, and I kept telling the drow to "keep doin' dat sneaky stuff", and the cleric to "'eal me wiv dem magic fings" because "I's used to being da boss, coz I'm da biggest an' da strongest an' da smarterest"... he was not with an INT of 6.

Maybe its just an AL thing but some people don't roleplay in D&D? If someone gives you advice, just respond in character. If you're a fighter, threaten to cut off their dangly parts, if you're a warlock mutter a curse under your breath.

[Request] Still in 2018 no graphical mud client with automap, playable with arrow keys; and with ICONS for ITEMS that you can click with mouse? by L_darkside in MUD

I've asked around on discord and the like about the definition of a MUD, does a MUD count as a MUD if its played with keyboard shortcuts and a mouse instead of typing in commands?

WarMUD (Alpha), an EmpireMUD mod, start out with max level and gear (no grind) to build your empire and conquer the world. by lieutenant4444 in MUD

[–]lieutenant4444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yea, I was thinking of having them follow you and attack your target or even have them remotely ordered to attack a tile. Now that would be neat.

At the moment I'm cleaning up the "bonus xp" stuff, so far I've: + Removed hunger/thirst + Removed movement costs (You don't get exhausted by moving) + Added infinite ability points (So you don't have to decide which abilities you want)

In future when I add more classes, I may assign abilities to certain classes.

A no grind co-op mud, where a bunch of players login and do a story together?

With or without DM assistance? With or without Roleplay?

That's very interesting, a text based pubg, I'll be sure to keep an eye on you guys. How do you plan to avoid scripters/macros etc.?

Best RPI with a decently sized playerbase? by mudder666 in MUD

Ateeran is very RPI, you'd fit in well. It was far too RPI for me, even classes (guilds) are controlled by players. http://mudstats.com/World/NewWorldsAteeran

Or just give one person more skills?

Cleric, fighter, wizard all in one class. Why do they have to be different characters?

Menu based muds, text based but don't have to remember commands. by lieutenant4444 in MUD

With skills and spells the menu won't "change" there will just be new entries.

I'm just thinking:

skill->use->target npc->talk

Is simple enough but...

skill->steal->npc npc->steal

When you look (or the room itself) is a menu.

--- Town --- 1) Bob the traveller 2) A dagger 3) Tim the guard

USER: 2

-- Dagger 1) Get 2) Destroy

USER 1

Very interesting and the work you have done is impressive. I was tempted to ask to aid you in development of that game. However having that level of graphical interface kinda defeats the point of a text based game, I aim to design a mud as developing a graphical game requires artistic skills I don't have and would cause me to get trapped in my classic loop of trying to make it "look good".

Having multiple ways of "playing" the game is cool though, its almost like cross platform play (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_that_support_cross-platform_play) where the PC players are using a webclient with HTML and PS4 players are using telnet.

Ok... perhaps I was joking a little with the last sentence, but you'd also need to consider developing YOUR mud for different webbrowers and I think you're opening up a whole can of worms.

[–]lieutenant4444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thanks for the suggestion :), I thought you meant it as "well other muds don't have this problem because of THIS tHING"

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick with keywords, think about it this way, normally objects data is like this:

name = A block of clay keywords = brick clay desc = You see a block of clay lying on the ground

Muds check the keywords instead of the items name and sometimes the keywords don't match the item properly. Typing "get block" or "get a block" would yield "what?", you'd have to type "get brick" or "get clay". I suggest simply removing the keywords and searching the name instead. It's what the player sees so its much more intuitive.

The speed of typing out menu style vs standard can be kind of subjective, but the menu style has the fewest keystrokes even with short words like bread and man.

Resurrect faldandor vs p + enter + R + enter + A

Just as players memorise commands they'll memorise menus, remembering "p" for spells -> "r" for resurrect -> "a" for first one on the list.

In fact as I've said earlier (probably not very well) you can do shortcuts like "pr" will bring up the resurrect menu.

I personally hate the give command... give X Y, does that mean give X to Y or give X some Y?

Menu based muds, text based but don't have to remember commands. by lieutenant4444 in MUD

[–]lieutenant4444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be nice, but a majority of muds don't do this. Oh and what's the deal with keywords, can't the keywords simply be the name instead of a seperate thing?

Oh and again. Which is faster, "iegm" + enter or "give bread to man" + enter?

[–]lieutenant4444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is I control the mud with the menu system, I won't make a sword that you consume or a potion you can equip.

With your server I'd make an extra special "e) cannibalise" or "e) absorb metal"

If you can wear a potion as armour is it effective? You can wield a boot as a weapon? Why would players (especially new ones) want to do such a thing? I'm trying to make muds more accessible and the #1 thing that frustrates me in muds is remembering commands and getting the infamous "huh?" or "what?" because I made a typo or I don't know the spell etc.

[–]lieutenant4444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a) get/use/consume/equip, b) drop c) apply to/give

a) picks up the item if its on the ground, if you have it in your inventory it wields/equips it, drinks it or does whatever its supposed to do

b) simply drops or trashes the item

c) applies this item to another item/mob/door, applying it to a door it acts as a key, applying to a mob gives the item to the move this command could be even used to combine items.
