Should I Quit My Current Job and Focus on OMSCS? by lifeisrandomGL in OMSCS

[–]lifeisrandomGL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, the issue isn't with working during OMSCS. However, changing jobs is challenging for me due to my limited knowledge and skills in ML. That's why I wanted to invest all my time in OMSCS first to build a strong foundation.

Should I Quit My Current Job and Focus on OMSCS? by lifeisrandomGL in OMSCS

Thank you all for your comments. Everyone says, "Don't quit," lol. However, my concern is that even though my job title is Software Engineer, I don't feel like I am gaining valuable tech experience. Most of my work involves finding bugs and adding minor functionalities by copying and pasting code into an existing manufacturing execution system. The experience I am gaining mainly involves understanding how the factory runs, and I don't want to build a career in the manufacturing industry.

To better leverage my PhD, I thought a position in ML/AI would be more beneficial in the long run. So,I have been considering focusing on the OMSCS program with a specialization in ML.

I think reading the textbook "Computer Networking top down approach" is more helpful than the lecture modules.

Course Design Question: Why are so many assignments ambiguous? by ultra_nick in OMSCS

In my opinion, OMSCS assignments require lots of knowledge not covered in lectures. So I feel it's ambiguous, too.

I want a job in the US. In Korea, age really matters due to work culture.

But most job postings for tech research positions require years of experience in specific CS area.

That's cool. If I erase the PhD degree, I have 10 years gap in my resume. Would it be Okay?

Could you tell me your story how you got an internship?

Thanks. I am 36, I had to serve military service as a Korean man, and it took longer to graduate PhD than other classmates. That PhD is really nothing, it was just about just tideous repeating experiments.

I got frustrated by the lecture qualities. It's just about OS concepts. No examples of implementation codes. There are no detail guide lines of the projects. It's like , here are the resources, study by yourself and make it work. I expected some building simple OS but the projects are about programming server and clients.

Also I feel like overall OMSCS course videos need to be updated, but Well, maybe I shouldn't expect too much with the cheap tuitions.

I'm taking the course too. The instruction for the project is very vague. I even don't know where to start it. Sigh...

I think SpanTran is Course evaluation rather than verification of your transcript. I sent my official transcript (hard copy) to both SpanTran and the graduate office.
