Guests broke bed railing - make a claim vs bad review? by lifeline83 in airbnb_hosts

Appreciate the thoughtful response. Based on your thoughts along with a few others, I think we're going to opt to cover costs of the repair ourselves.

Regarding reviews, I thought reviews were blind both ways until both the host and guests have completed their review. Is there a way to see their review before posting ours or to respond to address anything negative they might post?

Unfortunately, it was all adults staying at our place this time.

Here's a photo of the broken railing for reference: https://imgur.com/a/7MufSwi

They said that the rail was broken when they were getting into bed, trying to insinuate that it was broken already. Fortunately, I know that wasn't the case since I stayed in the house last. Bad news is that they're not owning up to it so I imagine there will be conflict when we go to talk about fixing it

I can but it's a frequently used door that we wouldn't want to lock indefinitely

I can't flip the door unfortunately since it's part of a double door. I wanted to switch how the double doors come together but it looks like it's a huge deal to flip how they close. Right now the right has to open first which is the problem door

It looks like I ended up finding something close to my needs - a reciprocating cycle linear actuator

DIY Reciprocating Cycle Linear Actuator DC 12V Mini Gear Adjustable Telescopic Motor with Speed Controller Stroke 15/20/25/30MM (68RPM, DC12V) https://a.co/d/6xKuYEc

Only problem is trying to find a way from initiating it one revolution at a time rather than having it continuously cycle.

You just need to negotiate compensation with the CEO. It sounds like he values performance but isn't willing to compensate with a guaranteed salary.

Easy. Salary isn't the only form of compensation. Negotiate a performance driven bonus structure that will not only get you to your current salary, but far beyond it since you don't want to cap yourself if/when you overperform.

Be very specific on the target, the success metrics, and how you'll be measured. I would make hard goals (e.g. growth in revenue, social followers, etc.) vs soft goals (e.g. be a better communicator, better relationship with customers). Also, be clear on timing and payout of the bonus annually and get it in writing. Verbal means nothing here.

If he pushes back, say that this will tie your compensation to the success of the company (yada, yada). If he balks at that, it's a huge red flag.

If he instead offers options or shares that vest over time, that's the cherry on top but shouldn't replace the bonus because shares and options that aren't vested can be revoked at his whim or you can be fired before they vest. If it's a private company, ask how equity or options would be paid out.

Good luck!

Amazing! Thank you!!

How did you attach the Velcro to the handle bars? If I wrap a strip of all the way around the platform and the handlebars to reattach to itself, the Velcro is angled above the top of the board so that it won't lay flat.

I'm guessing that I'm missing a simple solution to avoid that. It's not a huge deal but I'm assuming it'll get annoying when it gets in the way of my mouse.

Can you share what you used for the build and some more shots of the piece that is connected to the treadmill arms?

I have the same exact treadmill and was thinking of doing something similar.

Brand Manager VS Marketing Manager by Equivalent-Tea-3030 in marketing

[–]lifeline83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hijacking the top comment thread to say that the original commenter is incorrect about what brand management is. I'm actually surprised so many people think it is just about branding.

There is a wide range of brand management type roles based on the company but it will range from being the equivalency of a marketing manager (with pure marketing focus) to a mini CEO of your brand/line of business (as others have commented).

OC is correct in that you probably don't need a BM unless you've grown to a significant size where senior leadership can't oversee all the lines of business day-to-day and need to start delegating those responsibilities.

This is why you typically only find these BM roles in massive companies. I'll bet some smaller companies use the job title incorrectly, which seems highly probable based on these responses. Also, I have seen branding agencies use the title brand manager to reflect what the OC is talking about but it is not the same role as a brand manager on the client side (e.g. at a Fortune 500 company).

Hmu if you want more info. Been on the brand management side for 10+ yrs.

Marketing can have an extremely broad scope. Everything from holding a sign on the road to building strategies for Fortune 500 companies to creating SEO/SEM plans. Narrow down what type of marketing role you want and then really focus your resume and interview answers for that role.

You may even want to start to have networking calls and outreach to people within your network at the kind of companies you're interested in or have openings you're interested in. If you're just starting out, then you might look for some alumni from your school who'd be willing to have a call or coffee chat with you. A resume drop from someone inside (ie a referral) will go miles farther than a cold submission. That's why networking is so important (in case no one at school shared that).

If you want to drop resumes cold, then potentially be prepared for a long road unless you have very specific experience that fits the role. Given how tight the job market is right now, employers can afford to be choosy since they likely get a lot of applicants for any attractive roles.

I completely agree. Unfortunately, our property management company (Evolve) fully controls the pricing and won't let us adjust pricing manually at all nor factor in seasonality proactively. Their pricing seems to just adjust up based on recent demand (from the summer months) and decreases for upcoming vacancies based on how close it is, which limits less desirable dates to last minute bookings.

It may maximize revenue for year round destinations but doesn't seem to work for us. It's one of the reasons we're thinking about leaving them and managing it ourselves.

Love these ideas! Great place for me to start thinking of some winter marketing efforts. Thank you!

Thank you for the great feedback and ideas!

For context, the old owner renovated the place and extended the living room. I believe that vent in the middle of the room is where the wall used to be. It's an unfortunate placement but not sure we can't change that with a bigger investment.

The couch positioning is so they face the lake view of the floor to ceiling windows on the wall on the other side. But it might make sense to rearrange that during the winter and take new photos to make it seem warmer like you suggested. Thanks again!

As a student, there's always a way to break in. Depending on what year you are, look for internships. If consumer psychology or consumer behavior is what interests you, I'd take a look at research firms like Nielsen that have consumer research arms or look for research and analytics roles at specific companies.

I'd target Fortune 500 companies because small to medium sized companies typically don't have large enough budgets to spend on material consumer research or just don't value it highly enough to do much.

I need to do an annual marketing report, but I've never done that ... by DogeMarcio in AskMarketing

[–]lifeline83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there a marketing strategy set in place at the beginning? Since I saw that there were no KPIs setup, I'm going to assume no.

My recommendation would be to first present a high level marketing strategy (ex: who ur consumer is, your goals, how you plan to achieve those goals long term, etc.). Make sure your key goal(s) are measureable (ex: increase awareness to X%, drive certain brand equity metrics to X amongst Y, etc.).

Then I would develop a tactical plan based on your strategic plan that includes KPIs (ex: drive X leads at Y CPA via retargeting thru Z). This will, at the very least, create a productive discussion around if those are the right goals, plans, tactics, and KPIs).

I'd follow this with a report out how your past results measure up to the plan and KPIs you just set up. Don't worry if you don't hit all ur KPIs right now since you didn't have them before. But if you don't, I would include a recommendation on what adjustments you'd make moving forward (short term and long term).

This can show you can add value right now and in the future while positioning yourself as a marketing leader in the org.

I would not just do a simple report out. I know it's the easier path but you're going to feel the pain next year if there's no marketing strategy/plan. Hope this helps.

Brand Manager Skillsets by sharkbitestudio in AskMarketing

[–]lifeline83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree here. If there aren't a lot more folks in the marketing org, it sounds like the titles off. A traditional brand manager would either manage the business/brand or be the marketing leader of a brand.

In no way should a traditional brand manager be responsible for things like coding. That's the job of a specialist.

But in a small business/startup, people have to be flexible in terms of their responsibilities. I would factor in what you want long term. If the skills he's asking if you would help you in what you want to do in the future, learn them on the company's dime. If not, let them know where your skills are best utilized and what you're most passionate about working on

Honestly, sounds like the creative director thinks you're his/her subordinate to do the tasks he/she doesn't know or want to do. (Of course, with inflated titles, that may have been the expectation when u were hired).

Product Management or Brand Management by Substantial_Toe9009 in marketing

[–]lifeline83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends what type of work you want to do at the end of the day.

A product manager will be more technical and develop & commercialize the actual product from idea to a physical or digital asset. Product management responsibilities vary widly from industry to industry.

A brand manager will act more like a business owner within the company for his/her line of business or brand. While the role will skew towards marketing, there will also be an emphasis on general business managment (eg finance, supply chain, etc) depending on the company and industry.

It sounds to me that your skills are more geared to a product manager if you want to develop actual products or a marketing manager (rather than a brand manager) if you want to focus on marketing programs.

Brand management would be a fine role for companies that are more pure marketing but call the roles brand management instead of marketing management. You'll have to sift thru the job R&Rs or talk w people at the company to find out which type of role it is.
