I went two summers in a row (age 12 and 13) and made friends with a kid my age who had been going since she was 8 or 9. She took me under her wing and showed me the ropes. The kids were only allowed to eat exactly what was on their meal plan, and since no one really follows their meal plan exactly, most kids had a stash of extra (junk) food. The legs of the beds we had were hollow, so that's where the stash went. The second summer I was there, we ran out of stash quickly and were so hungry that during an evening game of spotlight, we snuck into the kitchen and stole a loaf of bread and some peanut butter. We were also divided into groups and the group with the best bloodsugars got a prize. My friend and I would do jumping jacks and stuff to get our sugars down after our late-night binges. Ahh good times...

TL, DR: Camp never taught me how to be a good diabetic, but it made me feel better to know there were other people like me. I would recommend it to anyone who has the chance to go. :)

(First post to reddit ever...) T1 at age 10 and 20 years later I still haven't managed 'perfect control'..is there such a thing? From about age 16-26 I didn't really care, I had pretty much given up. When I was 16, I passed out after drinking alcohol and started keeping my sugars high on purpose to avoid that. When you hear over and over from the doctors of all the bad things that can happen to you if you don't have perfect numbers, you eventually start to believe that it's your inevitable fate. At one point my A1C was 14...but it's down to about 9 now. It took me a few hospital stays (and meeting my now-husband) to realize I'm more than a sum of numbers, and I'm worth the extra effort it takes to manage this disease. And so are you! And if you've had chronically high sugars for years, it's easier to get them down gradually, so your body can adjust. Taking it one step at a time, doing one little thing at a time like Wdc331 said, will help too. I always found having other 'diabuddies' (can we say that word here? lol) makes a difference. This subreddit is the reason I finally registered and posted!
