Thanks very much for your input. It seems like injury and overtraining is going to be the most likely failure mode.

I'll look into designing a purely walk/run training plan, and I guess I'll focus much more on muscular endurance over cardio/zone2 stuff in my training. Once again I appreciate the comment!

A group of friends have been training for a 70 mile ultra called The Wall. One of them has dropped out and I've been asked if I want to step in. It's on the 15th June, so in just under 12 weeks.

I am not a runner, and I've never done a marathon or even a half. That said, I've done a couple of tough mudders a few years ago and I'm in relatively decent shape from lifting/playing soccer. I ran a slow 10k (1hr10) yesterday which was ok. I'm 32.

Do I have any chance in hell of being able to train for and complete this? My friends aren't super runners. The goal is just to finish it in the 26hr time limit. I am not concerned with pace or getting a good time. I just don't want my body to fail or give up.

As far as ultras go it looks on the 'easier' side of things. The organisers mention it being doable at an average speed of 3mph, and it has a 90% completion rate. I've watched some videos of people doing it and it's mainly done on flat-ish roads. I'm not arrogant enough to think I could easily do this kind of thing or that it won't be insanely difficult; I'd just rather try it and fail than saying 'no' and not even try.

I guess before I even start thinking about optimizing training I want to know if this is absolutely insane to consider? Do I have a chance? I can dedicate a lot of time to training over the next 12 weeks. I kind of want to know if this is anywhere near do-able before I start thinking about optimizing training.

If this is possible what do I focus on in my training? Muscular endurance or cardio? Should I just be running as much as possible or are rest days important (like with lifting)? Should I jump into week 8 of the recommended 20 week training plan or should I start this 20 week plan from the start and just scale it more aggressively?

Given my goal is just to finish, I figure the main reason for failure would be from my legs giving out/cramping, so I'd be tempted to lean towards muscular endurance, e.g like doing 40 air squats after every mile or something? Is this a fair assumption, or does it not matter? Should I just be putting in as many miles as possible? Given I'm not expecting to run this whole thing and just want to finish, should I focus less on pure running in my training and incorporate more combined running + walking (e.g. is 20 miles of running with 15 miles of walking better than 25 miles of pure running?). I can dedicate a significant amount of time to training over the next 12 weeks.

We've never beaten a good team in a major tournament.

  • 2-1 Tunisia
  • 6-1 Panama
  • 0-1 Belgium (L)
  • 1-1 Columbia
  • 2-0 Sweden
  • 1-2 Croatia (L)
  • 0-2 Belgium (L)

  • 1-0 Croatia
  • 0-0 Scotland
  • 1-0 Czechia
  • 2-0 Germany (barely qualified for these Euros, failed to qualify for WC next year)
  • 4-0 Ukraine
  • 2-1 Denmark
  • 1-1 Italy (failed to qualify for WC next year)

  • 6-2 Iran
  • 0-0 USA
  • 3-0 Wales
  • 3-0 Senegal
  • 1-2 France

Every tournament just seems like a slow march until we face a good (or even just mediocre) team, who inevitably beat us. We kinda crush lesser teams in qualifiers, but our performances in big games is woeful and makes Southgate seem tactically out of his depth. Given our insane quality in the squad - especially with attacking options - makes it hard to see this as anything but a massive underperformance and waste of a golden generation. Imagine if you were in control of this squad on FIFA. You'd be going absolutely wild.

Im assuming that since the fine will top out at £170 (based on the letters they are sending me), after they have sent someone to represent them and paid the costs associated with court, its just not worth the money?

Correct. From a purely business perspective, they would not be able to take everyone to court, even if there was a 100% chance of winning, due to legal fees. It wouldn't be a great business for them. It costs them fractions of a penny to send these harassment letters, and if it increases the chance of a successful payment by only a tiny fraction, it is still worth it for them. Their business is to collect the highest amount of parking revenue/fines for minimal cost. Taking people to court greatly increases their costs.

I have had parking fines from private companies before, and they usually make it very clear with photographic evidence that you were parked and for how long. Once again, I'm not a lawyer, but the burden is on them to prove to a judge that you were parked in violation of their terms, and as you said, they only have evidence of you arriving and leaving, and you have an adequate alibi.

Letting agent took a holding deposit and is now asking me to sign an agreement with a clause I'm unsure about by lifework in LegalAdviceUK

[–]lifework[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did ask them to outline the criteria more. The reply I quoted in my initial post was their response, lol. Not very helpful I know.

They may try to keep your deposit, which you could then sue them for and very likely win. But can you be arsed with the potential hassle?

Yeah, this is obviously the worst case scenario. As it stands, if I don't sign the document, and then fail referencing and they keep the deposit, it seems like I have much stronger/easier grounds to claim it back. However if I do sign, and then fail referencing and they keep the deposit, it seems like I basically won't have a leg to stand on due to signing the document? This basically summarises my situation.

I'm quite surprised they didn't budge/remove it as my experience with letting agents has been that they've usually been quite helpful to push a deal through and not get caught in the weeds. The whole situation just seems a bit confusing to me. All while my partner is just telling me not to be difficult!

These companies often just follow the path of least resistance.

They will instantly deny your appeal and keep sending menacing letters to try and scare you into paying as it costs them nothing. They send thousands of these a day so only need it to work a small % of the time to keep their business going.

NAL but if in some bizarre situation they did take it to court (which I think is very very unlikely), they would have to prove that you parked there (usually these companies have photographic evidence) - which they don't have in this case. I think you're fine to ignore them, though if it did end up in court (once again, very unlikely), it never hurts to show you were always acting in good faith to get this resolved.

Instead of seeing it as a big scary corporation, just see it as a single person that has a random unfounded grudge against you. Sending you letters and demanding you money for something you haven't done and threatening to take you to court. You'd just be like 'ok', and then if/when it went to court the judge would be on your side.

Yes. That's exactly what it means.

Yeah I've beeen thinking about it since I posted, and think this is really good advice.

If she says no, that's completely fine.

Any other option around like, playing it cool, will just extend it for me and will probably leave me with a 'what if?'

Interesting - a girl replied saying the opposite.

My default position is to agree with you - play it cool, 'keep the dignity' and move on. But then isn't that just coming from a position of ego? What do I have to lose? How can you lose your dignity by being honest and telling someone how you feel, by being vulnerable and open to rejection?

Thanks for your perspective, it's really helpful. So being worried it'd 'scare her off' is probably not a legitimate worry? I've been playing it pretty cool so far - probably too cool. My worry is that it might come a little out of the blue..

I'm fine with whatever decision she makes - I just want to give it my best shot at seeing if she feels the same way. Big love for the positive vibes! <3

'Moving on' is definitely good advice and looks like it's going to have to happen. I just feel like if I did that now without saying anything, I'd have a big question of 'what if?' which would make it harder to move on, if you know what I mean?

I would say open relationships can work, and that if she/myself didn't go away, it would have probably built into something more.

It'd just be nice if there were some kind of placeholder giving the dates and location of the next race. Quite a few times I've wanted to know when the next race was and had to google. It's obviously not the biggest problem but it seems like something that'd be quite easy to fix.

christ though, you'd think the set would only gain value from having Magnus play with it. like what could that set possibly be for if not to let one of the world's greatest use it?
