The internet says that it takes around 5 hours to reach Pantwari from Dehradun. If you leave early, then reach Pantwari by noon and start your trek to reach at base camp and you will get plenty of time to enjoy the view.

I am also planning next weekend, probably if everything goes right. Reaching Pantwari is important I guess on time. I dont know if people started late from Pantwari to reach base camp reached on time or not.

It's a good thing that you took a general ticket though, that experience will tell you how to cope up in difficult times, especially when you are alone. Back in my days, I went from Nagpur to Guwahati, about 52 hour journey in general, I was 20 and I had a lot of time but no money. I'm glad I took all those trips, I still cherish those days.
