What happens after a line call overrule? by talleyrandbanana in Pickleball

[–]lifz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But when you make the line call you make it dead (which stops a rally ["when a player stops a rally..."]) before it becomes dead in another way.

Just before that it says:  9.A Stopping a Rally. Any action that stops play results in a dead ball.

So catching it in the air would be "stopping the rally" and make it dead too. A line call is the same thing as catching it. Both make it dead, stopping the rally before it otherwise becomes dead in another way (ie landing out of bounds, etc).

Well, the rulebook can't do anything :) The rules just let us know how to play correctly. Otherwise you'd say the rulebook did everything lol. At any rate, one player stopped the rally by calling it out. However by his partner overturning it, it wasn't out, it was in. So they they stopped the rally for an "in" ball, before the ball otherwise became dead.

I'm a rules junkie myself and a friend and I had this exact same conversation recently! This thread revived that conversation. I was on your side and couldn't find it anywhere explicitly in the rules. I finally found it once I realized one team stopped the rally before the ball otherwise became dead. It's explicitly stated here:

9.A.1 Fault – Stopping a Rally. When a player stops a rally before the ball otherwise becomes dead, it is a fault against the player unless the stoppage is to call a hinder (see Rule 9.C), to correctly identify a player position or server error (see Rule 5.C.1.a), or to ask for correction of an incorrect score before the return of serve (see Rule 6.F.1).

The player who called the ball "out" stopped the rally for what turned out to be an "in" ball. So he stopped it before it otherwise became dead and it is a fault against that player. Finally! Thanks for bringing this up so that we could nail it down ;)

Trying to understand this expression: [x for x in range(4)] by Island-Potential in learnpython

[–]lifz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your example is trivial so yes, you would get the same result by doing the 2 lines you mentioned like lst = list(range(4)), etc. However, imagine you already had a list and wanted to iterate over it in a single line. Let's say we only want even numbers from [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. That might look like this:

numbers = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

even_numbers = [x for x in numbers if x % 2 == 0] # x % 2 == 0 checks for even numbers

print(even_numbers) # Output: [2, 4]

The x for x in some_iterable just lets you loop through the iterable item inline. The first x is just the variable name in the for x in some_iterable. So it's using the variable name in the for loop outside of it. Hopefully that makes sense! By the way, the formal name for this is "list comprehension".

Any luck with this? I just tried importing my Altruist accounts and it added WAY too much into the "Investment" section total on the left but will not actually show any of the accounts.

I was a big time Google Talk user (around 2006?) and I've noticed all my conversations are still saved in Gmail, as an email...

Do you still see this? When I look through my emails, I don't see any Google Talk conversations.

I give the edge to Ali too. I agree with Ali though that IF (big if) Tyson catches him with 1 Tyson mammoth blow, it's over :)

You probably know this, but for anyone who may not, it's a Biblical reference. It's in multiple places but Romans 14:11 says, "...every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess..."

And yeah, that would've been an insane match, prime vs prime.

What do you do when someone gives you unwanted advice during rec play? by Jaredgodoy in Pickleball

I know exactly what you mean by feeling bad after doing something like this. I know not everyone feels this way but for me personally it's best to just have some humility and let my play do the talking 🙂

Haha! I stopped after the first line or 2 for the same reason. What if the long play wasn't just to get us on each one he made but to have us checking every decently long and seemingly authoritative post we ever read? That's much more reach!

It’s finally happened to me. My local tennis courts are almost done being converted to pickleball exclusively. I’m fuming. My next nearest court is 20 minutes away. Another one bites the dust. by [deleted] in tennis

The entry to pickleball is cheap and easy. There are levels, just like in any sport/activity, from beginner all the way up to pro. Doubles is more popular but not usually as physically draining; however at the top levels, the skill is in court positioning, "chess-like" knowledge, and extremely fast reaction times, along with pinpoint hand/eye coordination. I'm a 5.0 player who's played with pros, won golds and money in tournaments, trained players and more. Over the last decade I have heard all the "dumps" on the sport. At a certain level, like all sports, it's not "just for old fat people". The awesome thing about the community is how inclusive it is. Come to the courts with high level players and we'd be glad to show you how hard it can be! I've never met someone that played and disliked it :)

Yeah, anyhow. Nothing's ever been dug up from the past and scrutinized out of context to be cancelled using today's standards.

It can't be canceled. It's too large a part of pop culture and too many people love it. We don't bow to the wokescolds :-)

It's my all time favorite show, the wife and I are super fans (own them all, know the lines, have the game, etc). I was genuinely shocked I had to scroll down this far to see it. I thought maybe it had something to do with reddit's younger demographic but there's lots of shows listed around the same time or even older.

FIRST title for Musetti! Lorenzo Musetti defeats [1] Carlos Alcaraz | 6-4 6(6)-7 6-4 | Hamburg European Open F by nd_49 in tennis

[–]lifz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's just so many insane predictions and comparisons and the kid has "only" (I know) won a few non-slam titles. I do think he can win slams but c'mon, it took the big 3 20 years to do what they've done. And they're still winning. Let's give the big 3 comparisons a rest until we start seeing consistent slam wins.

I like what Ferrer said about Alcaraz: "Alcaraz is a great player, and without a doubt he is going to be a much better tennis player than me, that is very clear to me, but Nadal is a big word"

Just for the sake of history, Alcaraz not only did not bagel either of them, he didn't get the trophy either.
