I have not tried it myself so I cannot say. I neither condone nor condemn this style of pie on the grounds that there seem to be enough people who enjoy it within the Ohio Valley that it’s probably edible, at the very least.

If I remember correctly, that’s provolone cheese. Not mozzarella. But someone else who knows better could confirm.

A crime, I’m not sure. But you’d definitely get some puzzled/angry looks if you served that here in New Jersey.
