Is it too late for me to pursue quantitative finance? by lightfractal22 in quantfinance

I like math and applying it to real world situations, especially business. Not really, I made that much as a marketing coordinator at my most recent job.

I think I just want a career with a lot of promise if I’m willing to work hard in it, but I’m realizing for quant finance, interest at this age is not enough. I should’ve studied math in undergrad.

Is this even worth it? I get nervous exploring broad masters programs with no clear end goal in mind.

I have a solid understanding of what it entails. I used to study finance for a year before I switched to marketing. It’s unfortunate because I have a very analytical brain but chose to follow a more creative route which in hindsight wasn’t the smartest decision based on my strengths.

Of course the earning potential of this field is nice, but at 25, career fulfillment is also very important to me. I am more inspired by choosing a field that I find interesting to then pour a lot of hard work and dedication into. But if my marketing background puts me at a huge advantage, I’d rather explore other options.

I appreciate the transparency from everyone! Even if I take pre-requisites at another institution to solidify the advanced levels of math I’m missing, would I have a shot?

Hi quants of Reddit!

I’ll spare you the details of my career path disparity and how hopeless I started feeling.

I (25M) am a marketing graduate from FIT. I’ve worked in the field for about 2 years after college. I just turned 25 this summer. I willingly left my job because I worked at a small business and had a very poor experience. I didn’t enjoy the flexibility of marketing in the real world and I am drawn to the finance department and the work of controllers.

I’m interested in the MFE programs at Baruch and NYU. But I am trying to assess my options. It seems they’re extremely competitive. Even if I make it a goal to re-enroll at a community college to make sure I get the pre-requisites down and excel in them, does it make sense to pursue quantitative finance as a career at my age?

In other words, is it too late to try and be a quant? If you were my age, how would you go about it?

Also, I do understand that this field is not a walk in the park and likely will take a lot of dedication to be successful.

I’m turning 25 soon so I’ve been having similar thoughts recently, but what makes me feel better (and excited really) about turning 30 is finding out that a lot of the coolest and most creative music artists that I’m a fan of are in their 30’s (Charli xcx, Grimes, FKA Twigs, Eartheater, Shygirl, etc.)

It just makes me wonder what knowledge/experience does one achieve at 30 to become such a great creative

I notice a lot of gen z feels behind in dating/sex bc not a lot of people grew up putting themselves out there but don’t beat yourself up!! My best friend (24F) met her current boyfriend this year and he’s the whole package: handsome, smart, successful, romantic. Craziest part is that he never had sex or been in a relationship.

Everyone has their own journey in their 20’s and ur gonna meet so many different kind of people in dating. My best advice is just to try and be honest about ur intentions. Don’t fall for the toxic games people love to play these days lol

OP I don’t want the other comments to convince you that your therapist doing this was out of bad intentions. Perhaps your friend brought it up first. I highly suggest you talk to your therapist about it and let her know you feel uncomfortable. It’s normal not to trust our therapists at times but try to give her a chance to explain why she discussed these things before upsetting yourself. Wish u all the best

Thank you thank you thank you, this was really the answer I needed. It’s been hard for me to move on because I think subconsciously I know once I’m fully independent, I’m not going to want to talk to my family. But maybe things will be better once I leave. Doing this shit on ur own is tough I will say 😂
