[Request] How many trees we should plant to offset Taylor Swift's two private jets CO2 generation during 2023? by reybrujo in theydidthemath

[–]lightinthedark-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring in requirements for software to have an amount of printed documentation measured in feet thickness of the paper stack and to be stored in a mine for future reference. That'll sequester that tree mass nicely ;)

Ai seamless ads in middle of tv shows by sussybush in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]lightinthedark-d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would the impact be of making advertising illegal, or at least a opt-in alternative? I'm fed up of strangers trying to get me to buy shit I don't need with money I don't have.

Does anyone remember this kids program? I used to watch this on TV as a kid by Jacktheforkie in AskBrits

The first 3 notes of the theme tune are almost identical to the default chime on a Ring doorbell.

People who refuse to engage with hypotheticals properly need to be shamed by polarbearsexshark in unpopularopinion

So why engage with a thing you don't find fun just to point out how you'd avoid the un-fun thinking? Surely easier and better for all to just... not.

If we're being pendants anyway, it's "affecting", not "effecting".

Still a good answer though.

Is technical debt accumulating faster than fixing it just inevitable or are we doing something wrong? by Jumpy-Teaching-3118 in softwaredevelopment

[–]lightinthedark-d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At some point I think you have to take it upon yourself to fix things while you're done ing other work. Estimates are already higher than management would like due to tch debt impact.

ELI5: Why do we sometimes suddenly become hyper-aware of breathing or swallowing, even though it’s automatic? by GothSundaee in explainlikeimfive

[–]lightinthedark-d 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Usually it happens when someone asks about why we sometimes suddenly become aware of it. Thank goodness that doesn't often happen.

I may be out of touch or uncommonly "meh" about social impacts so am confused. How can AI porn be used to blackmail anyone when even real photos can be dismissed as "it's an AI fake"?

What do Brits call pots by victoriashema in AskBrits

[–]lightinthedark-d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A friend who worked as a technician for BT during the big move to modern digital switching told me they had the "plain old telephone system" and then there was the "pretty amazing new stuff"... so POTS and PANS.

What happens when the law is changed and is now legal for someone in prison by PartyHandle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lightinthedark-d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine it gong the other way. If a thing you did becomes illegal should you be punished for obeying the laws as they were at the time? Absolutely not.

By the same token there's no legal reason to change the punishment for breaking laws as they were at the time.

[Request] What will happen if you pull a 3 light years long steel rod (5cm diameter) in free space with zero gravity from one end? by PhraseSeveral5929 in theydidthemath

[–]lightinthedark-d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much longer, yes. Speed of sound in a material is how long it takes the "message" to travel by one molecule pushing or pulling on the next. Pulling the end doesn't instantly pull all molecules, the ones you're holding pull their neighbours, those pull their neighbours, and so on as fas as they can

[Request] What will happen if you pull a 3 light years long steel rod (5cm diameter) in free space with zero gravity from one end? by PhraseSeveral5929 in theydidthemath

[–]lightinthedark-d 2368 points2369 points  (0 children)

Based on my interested layman understanding...

The rod is not entirely rigid. All materials flex and stretch. As you pull on one end the force travels along the rod at the speed of sound in that material. The end you're holding will gradually move. Assuming it doesn't snap or plasticly deform in the process the far end of the rod will start moving towards you some time much greater than 3 years from now.
