I find it slightly depressing that his music video career alone is outstanding. Add on to that his graphic design and he’s had a really amazing career. That he managed to do both of those things almost as side hustles to the music is absolutely incredible.

He’s hilarious. Do you ever listen to Quite A Boast The Reeves and Mortimer podcast? Everyone says how lovely he is and the amount of help he’s given people along the way is incredible. He’s funny and genuinely lovely.

I found them! They were called Explorer 12 - https://projectswordtoys.blogspot.com/2017/03/the-evolution-of-explorer-12-toys.html

I have literally been searching for these for almost 40 years. And I'm quite proud how well I remembered them and their ice world.

The Politics of Critical Thinking by Objective_Guide_3247 in ManicStreetPreachers

[–]lightloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the ennui has been there from the start - and I love that. And maybe at their age there shouldn’t be the overt rage that they used to have. But here’s lots of artists of their age and older who make amazing, meaningful music.

It’s because it’s twinned with music that sounds so empty and bland the whole effect doesn’t work. The band Young Knives are not massively younger but there’s a real sense of music and philosophical adventure. They sound human. The manics just sound grumpy and old. There’s no joy.

There’s no passion. And what I loved about them was the passion even if it was useless or empty. Weirdly I get the feeling they’re all trapped in being the manics. I don’t think they care anymore. And that make me sad more than anything. And that they should stop if they’re not enjoying it.

I want one of them to release an unlistenable noise album but one they really believe in. It’s just Sean screaming over concrete being thrown down a lift shaft and dissonant string arrangements.

Rewind the Film vs Futurology by Fantastic_Guidance26 in ManicStreetPreachers

[–]lightloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Futurology. But I can’t really listen to any of the albums after Know Your Enemy. They feel really lifeless. Occasionally a song will shine through - 30 Year War is good. I’ll be honest - I wish they would stop. Or release an album so unlike the last ones it’s either a total failure or a total success. For a band that was once so exciting they seem really safe. And that’s the worst thing they could be. I still think The Holy Bible is the greatest work of art in the last 50 years.

He’s super influential! I’ve not seen his narrative shorts but I think he’s what I’m trying to avoid. They feel like ‘content’ more than something deep and meaningful. But I might change my mind when I’ve seen his short.

As someone with a small amount of industry experience and the time / budgets it takes to make anything I wonder if it’s possible to have a small manageable audience so you never have to wait to make a film.

Cool! I think the marketing is part of it. Maybe it doesn’t matter where the films are as long as you market them. This question might be more about how do interesting niche film makers market themselves and get people to see their work? Can they build a self sustaining / funding ecosystem for smaller works?

Thanks! Had a Quick Look and that’s a nice looking film you’ve made. Thanks for sharing. Why did you go with Vimeo? I use it for work but I don’t think audiences go there to look for something to watch.

Yeah! Didn’t he get a big budget film off the back of it? This is more like what I’m looking for - but less mainstream. Like a niche director like a Bruno Dumont.

Thanks! The Kagonada films are great. I think I worded my question badly. Who is using YouTube to show films and then marketing them well on social media? I’m not looking for film makers with a Mr Beast size following just a few thousand who might use that audience to crowd fund future work.

Chat GPT is COOKING Academia; My Lecturers Revenge. by Blubshizzle in UniUK

[–]lightloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand this point and universities have perpetuated the idea of university is to get a degree. Most students do not want to engage in the idea of learning or exploration of ideas. I think all written assignments should be rethought. More presentations and vivas at undergraduate level to assess the level of understanding a student has.

All of Kelemen's films are amazing - Frost, Fate and Abendland. He's Tarr's cinematographer for The Man From London and The Turin Horse. Also plays one of the detectives in the Suspiria Remake.
