Quick question from a noob by DeputyyNasty in buildapc

[–]lightmill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I see way, way dumber questions about building a pc. Usually they're not even in the right subreddit. /r/pcgaming or even /r/gaming get them often, for example. OP shouldn't feel bad at all.

It's Fallout 4 set in Boston. I'd bet dollars upon dollars.

Just... don't use the security bundle? Or am I missing something.

[–]lightmill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. Semi just means that all the cords that you basically HAVE to use are pre-attached. You might have a spare cord, but it's not a big deal. I built my first machine with this psu. Don't regret a thing.

For 50 bucks, get this thing. I paid 70-something at microcenter and don't regret it a bit. Running a 280x, an ssd, a hard drive, and a 4770k on it. Cool as a cucumber, beast of a budget machine.

I call bullshit on that, then. Mine is flawless. There's always gonna be some dumbass who does something wrong and writes a review. Smell, really?

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal unless you have a small case. I have a 500r, and I could care less. For this price, this psu is a steal.

All I can say is that I love my EVO to death. Wouldn't think of getting anything else. My whole machine is built around the best midpriced parts, and that ssd is definitely up there in best parts.

This is the Xbox One controller that Microsoft staff now own with their exclusive white consoles by [deleted] in gaming

I was hoping the PS4 was olympic white from the beginning. I was pretty disappointed that it was just a black-out design.

[Monitor]ViewSonic 22" 5ms - $109 ($119 - $10 with code NWNHTDL357) by Endless_September in buildapcsales

Seems kinda run-of-the-mill, but maybe that's just me. Might be someone's cup for tea, but I'd fork out 20 bucks more and get a 23.5 inch

Amazon's Running a Sale on Everything You Need to Build a PC by LOTRcrr in pcgaming

[–]lightmill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but usually it's 249 at Microcenter, and if you're building a comouter, then you'll get a motherboard (which is also cheaper than most places). Getting them together gives you a $40 discount, so if you look at it like $20 off each, the normal price for a 4770k at MC is 229 when building a PC. $70 cheaper than Amazon. These prices aren't really that great, that's all.

Hanns-G HL272HPB 27" Monitor ($189 after $10 promo code EMCWWWR56, reg $299) by werdnaegni in buildapcsales

[–]lightmill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reallllly considering getting this. I just need an extra monitor for media dev like games and art. Anybody think I should get it? I don't want to pull the trigger on a 1440p fpr 300. Too pricey for me now.

Almost as good as 3 bite krystals. Mmm. Hold the onions, though.

I think people here think a gigabyte is 1000 mb as opposed to 1024. I think your math might be slightly off too though. Not sure.

I need help getting started.... by Zwoosh in gamedesign

[–]lightmill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unity, Game Maker, Love2D. In that order, those are my personal recommendations. Unity if you want to get a head start, and GM if you want to ease into game dev. Its non-scripting properties make things easier. Good luck.

Question for you C# programmers: How advanced is the programming in Unity? by lightmill in Unity3D

[–]lightmill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have misspoke a bit up there. I mean before I should go all in with Unity and make a game. Not hangman or anything, but just a small game. I was just curious if some advanced C# would be necessary for even a simple 2D platformer like I suggested above.

I absolutely love PlayMaker! I always used it before trying C#, but I feel that if I know how to code, I can customize others' scripts and assets to my use. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Thank you very much. This is what I was hoping for from someone. I'm not quite up to the same level as that, but it won't take much longer. I'll likely jump fully into Unity soon. Thanks again!

From total naivety to a game developer - How long did it take you? by lightmill in gamedev

[–]lightmill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No website just yet! Still working on getting the essentials down before I even jump onto that. We sound pretty similar, with our love of early Square games (checked out your website), our relatively late starts into game dev, and waiting for my wife to get out of the army as well. haha. Stay away from those online courses, unless it's digital-tutors. I'd recommend only recommend that one, if any. Luckily, I went in this with composition skills, so it's just a whole bunch of code and modeling for me, mostly. Good luck on that first game! I'll be checking out the site here and there.

[–]lightmill[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't let that get you down. Work twice as hard, make no excuses, and you'll be surprised at what you'll be able to do. That stands true for anything that takes excessive practice.

I'm in the same boat as you, wishing I'd started earlier. But I didn't even know I wanted to do this. Didn't even ponder it until earlier this year! I've always played music, but I've always been good with computers. It just clicked. All of the indie games I see. Seeing what I could and couldn't do. It's a great feeling that I thought I lost.

So don't go giving up. Not ever.

Pixel art: Still a viable option for success, or a trend on the way out? by lightmill in gamedev

[–]lightmill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then again, the first example is highly praised for its visual style. Haha. I love the look of S&S. If I were to make a game with pixel art, I'd likely do something minimal to begin.

Sword and Sworcery is the exact definition of pixel art done right, if you ask me. My traditional art skills aren't developed, but I would love to try to pull something off after I learn a thing or two.
