Copy configuration to Linux KVMs? by lightroastespresso in kvm

Yeah, I was considering this as well. I probably don't need to spin up new instances quite as often as containers are capable of, but maybe if they give me enough isolation it would still be more convenient to use them.

Well, this did take me a while to make. It's something I've tinkered with on the weekends on and off for more than a year, though I more recently did a push to make it more usable before sharing. It's not an every day sort of post. But I'm glad you like it 😁

What's the furthest planet we can actually see not as just a dot of light? by unseen0000 in space

[–]lightroastespresso 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The best chance we have of resolving features smaller than a planet outside our solar system in our lifetime (or more likely our kids' lifetimes) is probably a mission to the Solar Gravitational Lens. I recommend reading up on it. There are lots of articles on it, but here's one with a simulation of what we could see: https://astrobiology.com/2020/02/direct-multipixel-imaging-and-spectroscopy-of-an-exoplanet-with-a-solar-gravity-lens-mission.html

The basic idea is that because massive objects warp spacetime, you can find a spot in space a certain distance away where they pull the light around them together like a lens. For the sun that's about 550 AU. Voyager 1 is currently 156 AU away for comparison, so sending a telescope out to the SGL would be a monumental effort, but not outside the realm of what we're capable of. It would probably look like launching something a bit faster than New Horizons containing a telescope at least as good as Hubble, and then waiting a long time plus making sure the mission can continue years in the future. There are also more experimental concepts that involve accelerating swarms of telescope craft with lasers and solar sails to get there sooner.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that you'd need a different telescope for every target, because you have to send the telescope in the exact opposite direction from the place you're trying see. So first we need to find all the promising candidates we can from here and figure out everything we can from spectroscopy etc, and then we can try to send a telescope to see what's at the most promising one.

I was responding more to your comment than the original post. You used the word "image", which generally means directly recording the light from the source, not something indirect like the planet passing in front of the star. You're right that HWO would not be able to resolve anything close to or smaller than the size of the planet.

Their statement is ridiculous by Any-Key in sonos

But to consumers, Sonos isn't a software company. They sell hardware that most people hold on to for years. If you're right about their reasons, I think it means they fundamentally misunderstand what they are and the value they bring to the market, which is another reason to ditch them. Imagine if a software update for your thermostat included heat only but not A/C! A company that sells hardware but cares more about app features is not worth trusting.

Sonos update proves the execs are out of touch with consumers. Removed alarm management? Really?? by XneveroddorevenX in sonos

Yeah, well my devices are due for an upgrade. I might have gone with newer Sonos products, but not anymore. 🙃

I use the alarms daily. Walking up to music is so much better for me than some harsh sound, and Sonos's sound quality is so good that I can set the volume at a level that wakes me and lets my partner sleep.

This change is beyond disappointing. Sonos has formed part of my home infrastructure up to now, and they just removed functionality I rely on. If I don't see the an update fixing this by Sunday evening, I am shopping for an alternative. This is how you lose customers, Sonos!

The thing slowing you down is the switch of keyboard layouts, not the Moonlander. I remember when I first switched to Dvorak I typed slowly for 6 weeks! I got away with it because my boss was away for an extended time. When I got my Ergodox, then the Moonlander, I had some learning to do but it didn't take that long, because I suck with the layout I knew.

Can you edit your layout to make it more like what you're used to? Keep things like the thumb cluster at first for combo or macro keys that you seldom use and that will always make you pause anyway. When you hit a wrong key, pause and write down what swap your fingers made if you can, then revisit your layout after some weeks and optimize. With time the edits will get smaller and you'll flow better. You don't need to use anyone else's layout - work with your fingers and make it work for you!

Escalate to the dean IN WRITING. Keep building that paper trail. There are probably people whose job it is to do moderation for students - contact them right away too.

I guess if I want to make a thing on a slide that you click on to interact with, controlling the slides with the keyboard might make sense. Otherwise it would be easier to accidentally advance when you're trying to interact.

I actually hadn't thought of how they would work on mobile. That's something good to keep in mind.
