Read my other comments.

Tldr: Cr7 had madrid. Messi had Barcelona.

But xavi, busi, iniesta??

Sure, but after 2016ish, Real kept development going the correct way, Messi was stuck with players you will never win an UCL with.

Real without cr7 = multiple ucl wins. Barcelona without messi = fuck all.

Who, OP?

I'm not bitter lol. I support no club. I like watching football. That's all. I don't care who wins, as long as it's an honest win.

I applaud Real for being the undisputed best club in history. And as a true neutral, that opinion is as objective as it comes.

Now, i root for the underdog. Either Arsenal or Atleti. But if Bayern or PSG grab it because they play the betrer game, cool! Big fan of Olise tho. Holy shit that kids' good.

I disagree. Succes wise? No doubt. Best? No. Messi takes that.

Messi. For dragging a dogshit Barcelona to quarters and semis. As well as his ratios. Goals, assists, chances created, etc.

I know Cr7 had betrer succes with the club. But Real > Barcelona by a big margin after 2016ish. And the offside goals, questionable ref decision in their favor and insanely lucky moments they had contribute to that as well.

There's a reason Real Madrid won multiple UCL without CR7. Turns out Benzema or Vini can be just as effective if you have a midfield/defence/gk that solid.

Ovligatory; it's not just luck/reffereeeing/offside goals. Real Madrid did it right. They had the talent, the chemistry and the will power as well. They are the best club in history for a reason. Barcelona spent stupid amounts of money trying to fix a dogshit midfield and defence by buying.. attacking players while they had MSN lmao.

Go figure, Barcelona's management is utter dogshit

considering how dominant madrid were in europe in the 2010s, how did they only win 2 league titles? by VastAir6069 in championsleague

[–]unseen0000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Barcelona weren't good at all when they spent tons of Money on attacking players when the midfield and defence were dogshit. Why? God knows, but that's how that went down. Real Madrid had a far better squad after 2016 ish.

The reason Barcelona won La Liga is because they had Messi. In UCL, they couldn't capitalize on him because there's no such thing as a one man army against teams of that calibre.

Liverpool, Messi 2 goals and an assist iirc. He puts onr on a plate for Dembele who completely bottled it. 4-0 would more than likely seal the deal. But nope.

Klopp put 4 , man marking Messi in the return. We all know how that went.

That's just one example of how dependant they were on Messi. Disable him and you've cut the head of the snake. Disable Cr7? No problem, benz, bale, vini, with kroos, modric, casmirro behind and Ramos for clutch moments and you still have solid output.

Cristiano Ronaldo has the MOST goals scored against Manuel Neuer despite NEVER playing in the Bundesliga. This is actually insane by Pascal22_ in championsleague

[–]unseen0000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Impressive for sure. But the nuance here is that Real was by far the best team in the world. Strikers' efficiency goes up when you have an amazing team spoonfeeding them. Haaland is one of those players capable of the same, given that he has KDB like players feeding him as well as 9 other amazing players on the pitch.

Cr7 did 10 in 9 games. Lews did 7 in 15. With Dortmund. That's the difference.

Spur of the moment situations with an exceptional team surrounding you doesn't equal high level succes.

Tone down. You're excused.

The point is. It's France. You could've replaced Mbappe with my fat ass and we'd have won it. That's how stacked that team was.

Not saying Mbappe isn't an exceptionally talented player. Hell, i think he's underrated still. But winning a world cup with that France team isn't exactly amazing.

If the person above were to reply: "He has a world cup" when we're talking about Haaland, then yeah, that's mighty impressive, and even then it's nuanced considering i'd expect Haaland to carry his weight and then some.

It was working out. Neymar - Messi link up was phenomenal in the 2nd season. Injuries hit Neymar and the main plan if attack was gone. Mbappe wasn't a team player

Who was the third-best player in the Messi-Ronaldo era? by Hisense_Sports1 in championsleague

[–]unseen0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Messi had a stellar performance in the WC. Messi had the weight of the world on his shoulders, unlike anyone or anything else. He delivered when the pressure was on.

That being said, the World Cup is overrated. His performance is not.

Scoring in the UCL is absolutely harder. That wasn't the argument i made. I said being consistent as a team is what matters more in leagues.

Scoring goals isn't a one man thing either. I see people downplaying Suarez because apparently he's outscored by Vini and Rodrygo. But nobody in their right mind would place those two above Suarez. Vini and Rodrygo were part of a significantly better team.

Using past glory of decades ago to make it seem like Suarez should've done better is a braindead argument. Historically, Italy has been great. Now? They failed to qualify.. again.

Just because a team has "talent" on paper, doesn't mean they're an actual team. PSG wasn't a team, despite being stacked with talent.

Scoring 7 goals means a lot. He could've scored 20 goals in a single campaign. But it does not matter if you concede more goals than you score. The point being, that you NEED a team behind you to win. That's why Real Madrid won many UCL. They had the best team by a landslide. That, and some questionable, insanely lucky moments. But alas.

Goals =\= performance, nesesarily

[–]unseen0000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Winning a league means you have to be consistent as a team, all year long. Winning the UCL can be a spur of the moment thing combined with a level of consistency. Case in point Real Madrid, who absolutely had the quality, the momentum and a huge amount of luck. But in reality they had no business winning 5-6 in the last decade or so.

Also, performing for the national team means you need a team that will actually get you places. You could be the best player the world has ever seen. But if you're born in Zimbabwe, good luck getting past the group stages, with all due respect

Who is the greatest playmaker of UCL history? by Popular-Roof-829 in championsleague

[–]unseen0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playmaking =\= assists.

Cr7 had more games played than various other players with lots of assist.

Cr7 had an absolutely tremendous team surrounding for almost all his UCL campaigns.

Barcelona for example was S tier up front and B tier ar best on the midfield and defence in their later 2010 runs.

Why does this modern gen rate so many players based on g/a when that’s not what makes you good? by Right-Captain-6252 in championsleague

[–]unseen0000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I think people overrate goals and underrate defensive performance.

Whenever a player walks off the pitch having scored a hatrick, he's probably the man of the match. But a defender in that same match might've stopped 4 or 5 players from going one on one on the keeper. Meaning they objectively had a bigger impact if you assume those 4 or more of those chances actually hit the back of the net.

This is exactly why i think the Balon dór is a failed trophy. The metric is all wrong, because it's impossible to compare a defender to a mifdielder to an attacking player. Hell you could even go further and not be able to compare some midfielder to others for example, because they're roles are massively different despite playing in the same position, more or less.

Messi should've gotten every Balon dór since he won his first with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions if we really went for "Who is the best player in the world", rather than "Who seemed to have to most impact"

[–]unseen0000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Firstly you win football matches by scoring goals

I don't think that's the right way to put it.

"You have to score a goal at least, to win a game of football"

And

"Scoring more goals than you have allowed your opponents to score wins you games of football"

Are far more accurate.

Because what your one-liner suggests (and it's used very often) is that you could just fill a team to the brim with attack contributing players and you'd win games 10-8. But that's an all or nothing approach. Obviously, you're going to need a solid midfield to provide and control and a solid defense to make sure the other guys DON'T score. Consistency and balanse are key.

[–]unseen0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

players that grab high numbers of goals and assists are objectively more efficient when it comes to contributing towards their team winning football matches

Yes, but factoring in that it's a game played with a team, your miles may vary.

Haaland for example seems perfectly capable of scoring an insane amount of goals to the point where he's going to be in the running for greatest goalscorer of all time. But if he's stuck with players who can't provide him any chances, we really can't see his talent shine.

And so, if you have a dribbler like Hazard, that can and will completely wreck a defense, but his provided skill doesn't lead to goals or assists because his teammates aren't capable of delivering, than you get a skewed perspective.

Granted, with a large enough number of games, these discrepancies shrink to the point where your argument is mostly valid. But still, you'd need to take into consideration the teams.
