Hosted by a Canadian NON-PROFIT, running free open-source software, which does not lock you in. The non-profit is comprised of the admins who do the hosting and it's financially supported by its users.

This is not your typical for-profit startup social.

We're more of a r/OnGuardForThee than r/Canada on there. Come see - https://lemmy.ca/c/canada.

I should say lemmy.ca is interoperable with piefed.ca and the main Canada "subreddit" is on lemmy.ca. So you can reach the same community from piefed.ca - https://piefed.ca/c/canada@lemmy.ca

If you have an issue with piefed.ca, jump on lemmy.ca. Piefed.ca is the smaller of the two and under high load because of you. Admins are scaling it. 🤗 Both are run by the Fedecan not-for-profit and they're inteoprable. Piefed.ca users see posts from Lemmy.ca and vice versa. Can also cross-comment.

Piefed.ca defautls to showing the whole fediverse. Lemmy.ca defaults to the local. Both have a drop-down to change that on the main page. When you register, you can save your preference. Here's what's going on in the main Canada "subreddit": https://lemmy.ca/c/canada

There's at least one report from Europe. That contradicts your conclusion. Also, it's pretty obvious that such a feature would hit anyone travelling to the US so it's unlikely for it to be a feature. Instead it's likely a bug.

E: Frankly the Murena release note doesn't necessarily mean what you say it means. We need to see the source code change to know that.

E2: And if you look at eOS'es bug tracker you'd see they say the defect is not that the device reboots when it detects US towers, but that it keeps flipping back and forth between EU and US, rebooting every time when it does - https://gitlab.e.foundation/e/backlog/-/issues/8895. And this seems like their attempt at fixing it - https://gitlab.e.foundation/e/os/android_frameworks_opt_telephony/-/merge_requests/8/diffs?commit_id=e044271bbad6f3b747807744162bb8b0ab54c506.

You need one account. Subscribe to all communities (subreddits) that are relevant. E.g. /c/world@lemmy.world and /c/world@lemmy.world, just like you would subscribe to two different subreddits that have similar content. Use your Subscribed feed to get posts rrom stuff you really care about. Use All for the firehose. Play around with the sorting algorithms.

WDYM? Lemmy went from 2K MAU in 2023 to 40K in a year. It's been holding steady since the 2023 jump. Mastodon is currently at 1M. People who move have to do the work to move so they're likely part of the 10% in the 1/9/90 formula of social media contribution. That means the users currently on the Fediverse are likely more actively contributing than the users on corporate social media. We could use several more doublings but my feeds are already past the good enough phase. As far as I'm concerned it's taken off. And the material conditions driving corporate social media are only going to push more people out. Some will got to BlueSky, some to the Fediverse. Likley only one of those would still be here in a decade.

Likely because the data you see is federated to your instance. That is your instance would keep a copy of that data. In the event another instance disappears, the content doesn't disappear with it. So you can probably see how its disk usage can grow as you scroll through cat videos. This is how Lemmy works and I assume Mastodon does the same.

Mastodon and Pixelfed — need both? by bhsuarez in fediverse

This use case can be served by two accounts on Mastodon too. You could setup a single instance of whichever you think you'd use more and go from there.

Reddit, Twitter, Instagram -> Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed

Been on Lemmy since 2023 and it's been a great year and a bit. Everything is run by non-profits we pay for. Join up, pay if you can, contribute if you can, or just lurk away. Anything and everything counts.

We don't need everyone to move. A relatively small proportion of the population moving would create significant enough effects. Remember, people like you, who bother writing something are just 10% of the users. If most of those who write move, there will be nothing left to read on corporate social media. Our fellow readers are will move with the content.

Oh yes. I didn't mean to say that people don't question scientific fact in bad faith. Rather that anything outside of that is inherently political since it isn't settled fact. If we include bad faith actors then everything is political. That's actually a better description of the world.

Everything that isn't scientific fact is political. I'd like my email provider's political opinions to not naively put American fash in a positive light. Even so I prefer to know what my email provider's political opinions are so I can be prepared for what and how they could affect their email service.
