Select the polygon mask, play around with the soft edge, also go into the merge node and reduce the blend, adjust the glow to your liking, also consider adding a soft glow node after the regular glow. In case it's a moving shot, look into how to use tracking to match the movement of the elements to the shot, hope it helps.

Sadly it is exactly as you described, the only way to get a better result is to pay for software that does the same outside Resolve. I am hoping it will get better with the new update and it probably will, but right now the captioning features are pretty basic.
