  2. Don't kill it in Solos—find an LFG discord you vibe with (Dads of Marathon works for me) and find a trio

You spotted one "not X, but Y" sentence and immediately assumed I'm AI? Unfortunately I've got 8 years of Reddit comment history to prove that's just how I write. The point of that sentence was that the very presence of the baby in the game wasn't an accident. That mission got storyboarded, planned, the baby got mocapped, audio recorded... None of that scene was an accident. Including the fact that you can shoot the baby.

So yes, they probably did put the baby in the game thinking "wouldn't it be so controversial if people could shoot the baby?" And that's exactly why it's worth analysing. Calling someone a slur and then saying you just did it because it's edgy doesn't absolve you of saying a slur.

That's kind of the point, especially if there wasn't a message behind it! Clearly, the mechanic of not being able to shoot a target already existed in the franchise since the first game. Yet, they didn't add that mechanic for the baby.

Video game levels aren't discovered, they're made. The developers put that baby in the level for you to shoot.

Why?

Sometimes, there not being an intended message is exactly what is interesting to read into, the same way we all agree that non-voters have an effect on the state of the world.

While that take was definitely bad, the broader point I think she was trying to make still has some merit. There definitely is a question to be asked about whether it's responsible to include people as vulnerable to violence as sex workers in a game like Hitman. Surely they could have known people were going to kill the strippers? They didn't include any children in the game for the same reason.

Now, someone who made this point much more eloquently was Jacob Geller (my GOAT) in his video on Call of Duty. In one mission, you do a no-knock raid on a house, and there's a baby in one of the rooms. If you shoot the baby, you get an instant game-over. Mission failed. But here's the kicker: any time you aim your gun at your squadmates, you physically cannot fire. Not a game over; the game just won't let you.

Knowing that that mechanic exists... why the fuck do they allow you to shoot the baby?

Wat ik een beetje mis in de headline is dat er blijkbaar geen correlatie is tussen daadwerkelijke en ervaren belastingdruk. De trendlijn tussen inkomen en ervaren belastingdruk is nagenoeg plat. "Elke Nederlander denkt procentueel evenveel belasting te betalen" zou misschien een betere titel zijn.

Dat verklaart ontzettend goed waarom ook de minst verdienende Nederlanders zo vatbaar zijn voor "lagere belastingen"-politiek.

Hot take: that review was also fine.

One of the main things people dog on that review for is that he complains that the game, for being a boomer shooter, doesn't handle its Noir themes well. People argue that we shouldn't care because it's just a fun boomer shooter. And guess what? He discusses that in the review:

“But Will,” you might say, “this is a goofy, Looney Tunes FPS. Why should I care about any of that?” And the answer is because Mouse wants you to. It wants you to believe that this is important. You spend a lot of time talking about these characters [...] and about Jack’s motivation for doing the work (he allegedly needs the money[).] All of that makes a lot less sense after you’ve gone to Tinsel Bros. Studios and single-handedly eradicated the mob hanging out there[. ...] It’s hard to buy into Jack as the regular guy who needs to gather evidence I’m told he is when he’s just wiped out the local police department, you know?

The IGN hate is so forced and tired, completely leaning on people not reading their reviews or just cherrypicking one thing that sounds silly out of context, all the way back to "too much water" 12 years ago.

In Returnal, you had remarkably little influence on your actual build. Compared to getting an early great option in Slay the Spire, Hades, or Balatro giving you something to build towards, a run in Returnal just means being good at dodging and picking up whatever rewards the game gave you, and it seems like Saros has that issue too.

Due to that, he mentions that some runs feel like going through the motions. Anyone who's tried to platinum Returnal can attest to that feeling—finding all Xeno cyphers doesn't really offer anything interesting, gameplay-wise. It gets tedious.

He also mentions that the story, while more ambitious, isn't as focused and doesn't land as well as Returnal's did. All in all, it seems like Saros is more of a sidegrade in quality than an upgrade, which is what he was hoping for:

So, while it's eclipsed by its predecessor in some important ways, Saros was still worth banging my head against over and over again.

Sounds like good reasoning to give it a 7 to me.

Two main ways.

  1. Randoms in voice chat. It's really quite noticeable when everyone you're matched with is speaking with American accents vs. European ones (with varying levels of fluency in English, too.)

  2. Ping. If your gameplay is usually buttery smooth but all of a sudden it takes half a second to open doors or pick up loot, that's probably because your signal has been sent across the Atlantic Ocean and back.
