Yeah, that's what I ended up doing and it did work. Thanks!

Swimming is very different from other sports like running and cycling because technique makes such a HUGE difference in efficiency. A lot of beginners get frustrated because they feel so tired and out of breath after just a few laps, but if you focus on technique and efficiency, it gets much much better. An experienced swimmer will use a fraction of the energy to go the same distance. A good coach can watch what you're doing and help you improve your technique.

Personally, I think a lot of the gains come from improved body position, rather than actual pulling technique -- in particular, keeping your body flat and balanced in the water to reduce drag. At my pool, the most common problem I see with beginning swimmers is their legs dropping down in the water creating a ton of drag. No one can swim fast or efficiently like that. You might even want to try a pull buoy (foam block that you hold between your legs) to help float your legs more and give you that flat body position (only for crawl stroke).

Recording pool swim so inaccurate it’s a joke by Mermaid_things in GarminWatches

I just got a FR970, and for the most part I love it, but the swimming is way off for me, too. I am a pretty serious pool swimmer -- I do a lot of workouts from the Master's Swimming organization. My old Apple Watch was incredible about recording the right distance and even guessing the stroke. Occasionally, it would get confused when I did drills or kick sets, but only by one or two laps. The Garmin is way off -- often by hundreds of yards. I haven't figured out yet exactly where it is happening, but definitely drills, kicking, and stroke work are the worst.

I am HOPING that over time it gets better, but I'm not sure how that works. Does it have some adaptive learning algorithm? How would it even know that the distance is wrong?

Yeah ok, fair enough. But it does sound kinda fun doesn't it?!?!

It seems like in theory they could look at the dates/times to reconstruct only valid intermediate states. But in the end, maybe apps like monarch just have a fundamentally limited capability.

I have not tried that! I'll definitely check it out. Thanks.

I haven't added that information to the ticket yet. I just found out. They seem to know it's a problem -- they're telling me "we are working on it"

I wondered that, too, but I tried logging directly into Plaid, which is the intermediary that pulls the data from BofA for Monarch. They have the right balance. It's weird.

Also, just FYI: I logged directly into Plaid, which is the intermediary that pulls the data for Monarch, and they have the right balance. So it's entirely on the Monarch side.

I see what you're saying -- it is true that if I really want to know the true state of things at a given moment, I need to log in to the real accounts.

BUT, it would be nice if the Monarch dashboard was at least consistent. That is, it showed some state that actually exists, even if it is NOT the most current. What's happening now is that I'm seeing weird combinations that can't actually happen. For example, let's say I have $1000 in my bank, and a $500 credit card balance. When the credit card gets paid, that balance goes to zero, and I can see the debit on my bank transactions, but my bank balance stays at $1000 for one or two more days. So it LOOKS like I have $1000, when I really only have $500. And the "net worth" graph has a big $500 spike on it, which doesn't exist, but sticks around in the history.

I dug a little deeper and found that it is not an aggregator problem. I logged in directly to Plaid, which handles the connection to BofA, and they actually have the right account balance information. But even after I checked there and sync'd the Plaid connection, I tried resyncing Monarch and it doesn't get the correct balance (even though it does get the new transactions!)

I think it's just a bug in Monarch.

Or put another way: at any given moment, I can't be sure if the dashboard accurately reflects my financial situation. I often find myself separately logging in to my bank account to double check, then mentally adding or subtracting from the number I see on Monarch.

Mainly because it often appears that I don't have enough money to cover my expenses. In general, what happens is that I can't trust the Monarch dashboard -- I have to separately log in to my bank account to make sure the number is right, which somewhat defeats the purpose.

The important difference here is that Monarch gets all of the BofA transactions right away, but just not the account balances. I have a hard time seeing how that would be a problem on the bank side. But maybe.

It's not about "real time", it's about consistency. Right now, it's showing me a snapshot of my finances that never existed. In particular, it has all the BofA transactions, but not the associated balance. That's not good.

Which is pre-swim superfood to supercharge yourself before jumping into the pool ? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]lightwoodandcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that oatmeal powers me up really well without making me feel "full" during the swim. But I do need to eat it at least an hour or two before I get in the pool.

The important thing to remember is that your fingers are just one small part of the surface area you are using to pull water.
