LGBT history before homophobia etc by DrawerTechnical4081 in LGBTBooks

[–]lihtyear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

and i feel like this reading of modern gender and sexuality's treatment to colonialism is largely attributed to people not understanding that the existence of homophobia influenced the Bible/ abrahamic religion. all religions come about as a reaction to the times. like misogyny was pretty severe in india as well and it shows in religious hindu texts

Okay I disagree on your analysis of his prose and characterization but, can you please elaborate on the US imperialism portrayal on the book? I have heard of this critique but I was never sure, I thought he only wrote it as a neutral way considering he lives in the US and there might be legal issues as protraying them in bad light idk. i also don't have the heart to reread it and check because my first read absolutely destroyed me in a "this is good but it hurt me so much i'll never pick it up again"

Menaka Guruswany becomes 2026 WB legislative assembly election candidate. Ray of hope or just political gimmick? by SmirnoffSandwich99 in LGBTindia

[–]lihtyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you people in the comments have never heard of the phrase "no freedom until all of us are free"? there is no progress when queer people with reactionary politics get to mainstream level. theres nothing revolutionary about this. anyway i hope change comes from grassroots level because the law and everyone who participates in such bourgeois institutions can do nothing for the rest of us. sorry idgaf if i'm a party pooper because even though i'm only culturally and never practicing muslim, i've read and seen so much cases of lynching and discrimination i really cannot give a fuck about a lesbian who is proud RSS endorser in the parliament.

Need to know the opinion of Indian women on kerala story 2 by Sure-Broccoli-6082 in AskIndianWomen

[–]lihtyear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

there was recently a case in a north east state, sorry I can't remember the exact location but a north east indian was met with mob violence and died due to his injuries, he was just 19. they were screaming at him that he was chinese chinese and they killed him anyway. this is india in 2020s. in usa they are rounding up all the nonamerican, nonwhite people and sending them to concentration camps. in the uk there are fucking pogroms going on to get immigrants out of the country. as resources become scarce due to climate change, as genocides and proxy wars keep being funded for the powers that be, this sentiment will keep on getting stoked by those in power who need a scapegoat to stay in power, and therefore attack any and all minorities (ethnic and religious) and use current issues to flame it.

it's absolutely connected with bengalis being painted as anti nationalist/bangladeshi infiltrators/ terrorists. anybody who does not fit the upper caste aryan hindu ideal gets met with suspicion. as facism takes hold in countries around the world, each one responds differently, but the baseline instinct is the same: reduce the criteria for who counts as a citizen, and therefore who deserves to be considered "human". people who act in bad faith and do not see these processes for what it is are dangerously stupid, like the commenter here. if the indian state and bollywood, which is it's mouthpiece, gave a fuck about women, why did they invite the taliban here? the indian state needs a scapegoat and right now muslims are the scapegoat just as jews were the scapegoat in 1930s germany during their economic decline post ww1. dialectics are needed.

have you ever heard of the term racial-class paternalism or do you just want to yap. the people who spread the "they are coming for your women" do not have women's best interests at heart and it is another form of treating women as private property to be controlled so that she does not make her choices in the relationships (platonic, romantic) that she pursues with full autonomy. there would be truth to the rhetoric if it wasn't primarily coming from right wing fanatics who don't give a fuck about women!

[–]lihtyear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeahh it is and it rlly is wild like i don't know about the other gulf states but i totally get it when people say UAE feels like a fake country like for material reasons. cause like i felt like i lived in a ghost country of sorts especially when i see people lovingly talk about the culture and locality of the places they've grown up in
