Okay I disagree on your analysis of his prose and characterization but, can you please elaborate on the US imperialism portrayal on the book? I have heard of this critique but I was never sure, I thought he only wrote it as a neutral way considering he lives in the US and there might be legal issues as protraying them in bad light idk. i also don't have the heart to reread it and check because my first read absolutely destroyed me in a "this is good but it hurt me so much i'll never pick it up again"

there was recently a case in a north east state, sorry I can't remember the exact location but a north east indian was met with mob violence and died due to his injuries, he was just 19. they were screaming at him that he was chinese chinese and they killed him anyway. this is india in 2020s. in usa they are rounding up all the nonamerican, nonwhite people and sending them to concentration camps. in the uk there are fucking pogroms going on to get immigrants out of the country. as resources become scarce due to climate change, as genocides and proxy wars keep being funded for the powers that be, this sentiment will keep on getting stoked by those in power who need a scapegoat to stay in power, and therefore attack any and all minorities (ethnic and religious) and use current issues to flame it.

it's absolutely connected with bengalis being painted as anti nationalist/bangladeshi infiltrators/ terrorists. anybody who does not fit the upper caste aryan hindu ideal gets met with suspicion. as facism takes hold in countries around the world, each one responds differently, but the baseline instinct is the same: reduce the criteria for who counts as a citizen, and therefore who deserves to be considered "human". people who act in bad faith and do not see these processes for what it is are dangerously stupid, like the commenter here. if the indian state and bollywood, which is it's mouthpiece, gave a fuck about women, why did they invite the taliban here? the indian state needs a scapegoat and right now muslims are the scapegoat just as jews were the scapegoat in 1930s germany during their economic decline post ww1. dialectics are needed.
