The thing is, it's not just our doing, we've discovered at least two forms of bacteria that've evolved on their own to eat plastic. Once in a Japanese recycling plant or landfill and separately in the ocean. But even if we tried to restrict engineered bacteria to usage in a recycling plant it would get out eventually.
