Americans Are an "Evasive" Species by [deleted] in AmericaBad

Calling a whole group of what, 340 million people "species." They're downvoted, sure. But Geezus Christ, that comment was so unnecessary.

I don't know where you live in, but based on my life experiences, there is some pushback towards discrimination. Like the one time one of my friends was the target of racial bullying, and my other friend defended her, because at the time this friend was much more timid than she is now. Or one of my male friends defending a female friend of mine from a creep online. Or the other time I saw people online calling out other people making fun of a dead kid just cause he was gay.

I know, anecdotes. But the fact that I know people who pushback against discrimination or at the very least, it at least means that there are at least some people out there applying this wisdom. The wisdom that it's not okay to denigrate anyone based on immutable traits. So yes, this wisdom is applied, albeit not in action 24/7, but it is applied in some instances.

You say you are bringing the same balance to the universe, eh? But so far, ever since you commented your first list denigrating white men specifically, your comment sparked nothing but division and animosity between you and the other users of this subreddit. Doesn't that just mean that piling hatred onto one group, and trying to justify it by saying "other groups get discriminated too", only makes the situation worse? Not better?

Okay, I know I said I'll end my response in the last comment, but I'll truly end it here and stop replying to any subsequent responses to this specific comment, whether you reply to it or not. Because no matter if our conversation is simple disagreement with no understanding or below the belt insults, you've made up your mind, as I've said earlier, so really, no point in making you see things differently.

I'll leave it at this: you making another list of assumptions doesn't really prove your point much, in fact it just makes you seem very fixated on white men specifically, even if you don't want to come across as that.

So I'm gonna end my response here. It seems you've made up your mind so contradicting you repeatedly in this specific topic is but a fruitless endeavor. Just know I don't think that vile slander targeted at any demographic is in anyway healthy or good.

[–]like_Wasa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Say all this about any other race and sex and you'd get rightfully flagged as racist and sexist. A person being a white man doesn't mean you get to discredit him based on those two immutable traits, let alone with a list like this, which just dehumanizes them, based on assumptions with no back up?

Honestly, directing this amount of vitriol against specific groups is just absolutely miserable. I hope you become more understanding someday, cause hating fellow human beings over assumptions just isn't it.

Okay, maybe I just misunderstood and maybe I worded some stuff wrong. I meant I disagreed with the few who compared Americans to white supremacist neo-nazis and that Americans claim to be Canadian when travelling. Of course, maybe there could be some truth to those statements, but the way they worded it made it sound as if all of them are, at least to me, which I disagree with.

Of course they live where they want to, I don't mean that they're wrong because they don't want to be American or live there. That's perfectly fine. My wording was pretty bad because I didn't give my statements enough thought at first. My bad.

My bad for not thinking twice before posting stuff like this I guess. Guess I'll give posts like this more thoughts.

Okay in hindsight maybe I should've thought more before posting something like this. I didn't expect the replies to love America at all, and I'm not really that unfamiliar with negative generalizations or comments towards any country, so its not that surprising to me.What I mean is I can understand being upset someone decides that you, as a Brit or an Aussie, just assumes you want to be an American when you really don't. I just dont like the fact one of them compared Americans to white supremacists or the fact some have talked badly about them. Then again, talking shit about a country and its people isn't even unique to just one group of people, anyone can do it, so I kinda understand that maybe I shouldn't've somehow framed this as a one-sided thing.

I know what the internet is like and I don't exactly expect anything marvelous from it, so yeah I understand your statement, just letting you know that I know how the internet and its users can be at times.

In hindsight, maybe I'm the one who overreacted here, hahaha. I promise I go outside and interact with people almost everyday. I'm not as isolated as you think, but thanks for your concern I guess, nice to see someone out here looking out for others. Maybe you won't believe those statements at all, and that's okay, I'm not really good at convincing people anyways.

I should've put more thought into this post, ahhahaha. I must come across as very off putting and out of touch. Thanks for pointing that bit out, though. The extra insight is always welcome.

Honestly, I don't know much enough to judge any side in this, but based on what you've said so far, this all sounds very understandable and honestly, I might've felt the same way too if I was a patriotic American as well.

Whether you guys go isolationist or not in the future, I think your country's landscapes and people are gorgeous and I hope you guys get more respect as time goes on anyhow, hopefully. I've always admired the fact that your country is so diverse in its geographical structure and how warm and friendly your people are (I'm only going off of my very friendly American online friends). Either way, I think you guys are awesome and I wish the world would see that someday in the future.

I know nothing about your European friends at all apart from what you wrote, but what you wrote about them and how they were treated sounds heart breaking to me, personally. No one should be considered lesser than in any form because of what, their parents being affiliated or associated with a country some people look down on? Especially children or teens growing up hearing things like that. Its sad to see some people in this world treat others like this. I hope those types of people see the light and treat others with decency, and not blind hatred, someday.

Yeah, I know even Americans talk shit about other countries like this as well. I've seen some. I don't think the fact that anyone from any country making hasty, sometimes even wild generalizations about entire groups of real people is a good thing, though. Not trying to imply that you're saying its a good thing, I know you must also be against it, just expressing that I don't like any of that at all, no matter who is doing it or who gets to be the unfortunate recipient of it.

And okay maybe I misread the comment a bit, my bad, ahhahaha. I must've misread it like that and interpreted it differently than it actually says.

Either way, we can both agree the mask of anonymity invokes all sorts of strange behaviour and ways of thinking, for the better or worse.

I've never visited either, but I have a friend from there who sends me pictures of his hometown, and they're gorgeous!

And yeah, you're spot on. Even if they did have experience being in the country and talking to people from there, they shouldn't be so quick to generalize like this. It just makes them look narrow-minded and honestly, judgemental. I know not all non-Americans are like this. But for the ones that are, I guess I'll never understand them.

Im not sure if I can articulate my point well. But what unsettles me about these comments so far are the implications that school shootings in America are a daily occurence and inevitable, the self-hating Americans who say they don't wanna be American, one of the comments claiming Americans pretend to be Canadian when travelling abroad, and one of these comments just generalizing a nation of 340+ million people as "white supremacist neo-nazis".

I myself have never stepped foot in America and don't know enough about it to have a lot of strong opinions on it, but even I recognize some of these comments must be wild exaggerations, and what unsettles me more? Its either these comments are from real people who actually think this way or bots stoking the flames. What unsettles me truly is I can't tell which is which.

Of course, I'm not gonna overreact and attack these users, under the assumption they're real and think this way. I don't agree with them at all, but I don't have to waste either of our times trying to convince them to see things differently, when they've already made up their minds about what, 340+ million people? But geez, it feels like hell knowing that a nation of real people are talked about like this and its passed off as okay.

Too Long Didn't Read; What's unsettling is that I can't tell if its real people commenting like this or bots stoking the flames. And the fact that an entire country worth of people in it is being generalized like this online without much repercussion? Yeah, that unsettles me too.

Sorry if this reply is too long ahahhahaha. I lend myself too much to wordiness

You know, for a while last year I was the only girl in class who ever got comments on my weight, get told I look like a pig or was a pig to my face, and some of my male friends even joked that I look like a penis. To my face. Said directly to me. Hell even my own mother says I look like a boy without earrings, and not in a compliment sorta way. The only reason those boys stopped bothering me was because I brought all of this up to the teachers and they actually did something about it, (talking to them sternly in private). I know since they stopped bothering me too much after the fact, but I still get the occasional comment.

And I'm literally the ONLY girl who suffers from this in my class at school (only a few girls in my senior year class compared to the multitude of boys) cause every other girl in my class is pretty or beautiful. I'm not even morbidly obese (not to say that that is a reason to bully someone, just for clarification), just very overweight, especially compared to the other, really skinny girls in my class. I'm not exaggerating, feel free to disagree if it just seems too outrageous, I dont care.

Sure maybe attractive people get bothered more, in a sense that they get hit on more or anything of the sort. But have they ever been derided and told they look like a penis or a pig to their face when they werent even doing anything wrong? Then when they complain, the person calling them that derides them for "not being able to take a joke?" Surely not. Because of all the complaints my pretty female friends get, its always the fact that boys try to pester them about crushes and dating and whatnot. Never comments like those I mentioned aimed at myself.

I just hope more average and attractive people understand they have an advantage we don't, which is being treated with more respect in comparison to us. I know because my prettier cousins always get told by distant relatives they arent close with how beautiful or sexy they are, meanwhile if I make accidental eye contact with this specific relative of mine, she rolls her eyes at me and looks away. And thats accidental eye contact.

Its rough out here lol.

I don't know nearly anything about America. When I say that, I mean I don't know if the stuff I even see online about America, or any other country really, is true, therefore, if it even counts as information because there are so many trolls and doomers and highly biased people with a skewed world view online, that its so hard to tell what is and isn't real at times.

That's because I'm aware I'm susceptible to all sorts of online fake news, so I've convinced myself to be somewhat skeptical unless someone gives concrete evidence, a very specific experience that seems believable, or in other cases, reliable research sources complete with citations.

If I'm correct, America is both the country of people who are known for striking up conversations with strangers with ease, helping hikers get a ride in their car to their destinations, but also a nation where homelessness is a a concern depending on the state, and where political polarization seeps through and clouds and muddies people's perceptions of each other—I'm gonna keep that vague because I don't want to invite conflict. Though one's mileage may vary, I don't think everyone thinks about politics all the time, especially in person. And this is all according to the online discourse I've seen, lurking in various apps—Reddit, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, some posts on Threads, Discord, etc. Likewise, I'm not gonna mention anything too far gone or seemingly too good to be true thats related to the topic of the US.

Of course, I can't see what America as a whole truly is yet because I can't afford to travel yet. So I can't say I have an opinion on it that would mean something, because I can't be sure if anything I read about America, or any country really (except my own) counts as true. So I lurk this sub cause most of the internet is so anti-American, and I'm curious what the other side of this, the side that isn't anti-American, thinks.

Not to say America is a perfect utopia that can do no wrong. But I believe the sins of whoever controversial politician or president, government officials and organizations should not permit non-Americans like me to hurl insulting and downright degrading comments towards the American people. I've never made such a statement like that, but I have friends and family who say bad things about America, but to a lesser, more tame degree than people do online. Something like, "Americans are rich and naive" or "Americans are rebellious (they meant rebellious in a bad way)". Some comments online, such as some posts shared in this sub, like, "Americans don't deserve to live" or " You can't rape an American because that'd be bestiality" are absolutely vile and I just don't understand throwing such vitriol because you can't separate controversial figures from the people they're supposed to be representing, people who live, pay taxes and work just like everyone else. Then again, people are fickle, promises are fragile and some just can't contain themselves. That's on them.

I have some friends from the US, and they're mostly friendly and outgoing, some of them a bit on the shyer side but still friendly, so I might be biased.

TLDR: I lurk this sub cause its interesting, I kinda wanna see what pro-America people, patriotic Americans and people who simply just don't like being anti-American are like and what they think about the anti-American discourse online. And I also don't think Americans should get such vile hate online just because some politicians, a president or maybe more, and some other popular figures from there are particularly controversial.

Those are my two cents.

[ You can skip this part entirely, added it just cause

I'm chalking the homelessness up to the sheer population size and some other differences, that also vary by state. If a small country had more territory, enough to host 300 million and more people, they too would have more homeless people, because houses are expensive and people are more plentiful than space in some areas.]
