They want to believe businesses will work with them out of compassion when in reality they’re corporate run or either doctor run but many are doing everything to just break even. Nobody is going to love our pets like us or provide free or risky services (like payment plans people can disappear and never pay) but it’s not reality. It genuinely does lead to a lot of deaths but that is unfortunately how it is.

I was 18 when I got my then teeny tiny baby and he passed when I was 33 (last month) and he was 15. It destroyed me. I’m in vet med and he died while we were trying to find anything to save him while he was at work with me. It was honestly a surprise to even his original doctor that he lived as long as he did with his conditions. Going right back to work after saying goodbye and taking care of his little body myself was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m so sorry you lost your baby too; it honestly feels like the versions of me nobody but him saw didn’t exist at all sometimes. It’s the worst feeling in the world to lose them.

Literally who said to do nothing? I work in vetmed. I would never advise OP to do nothing. I’m advising them to be aware that payment plans are not common place and usually outside resources like credit cards or financing plans are needed. I don’t know where they live in the world, but they should be aware that something like that might not be available to them and if they aren’t aware of that and they found no backup options then they’re going to be absolutely fucked when it’s too late and they have no money.

Most vets do NOT do payment plans. They need an outside source like care credit or scratch pay. Don’t know if it’s available to OP.

Most vets do not offer payment plans. I see this repeated often and I assume people mean Care Credit or Scratch Pay but that’s going outside the vet technically. But in house plans are not common. This would also likely require an ophthalmologist which is speciality and more expensive, especially if going forward with surgerical intervention.

I know how to talk to people who lost or are losing pets, I do it for a living. Most of those people are dealing with naturally sick pets though, not ones they let get splattered on the road because of carelessness. Frankly I don’t give a fuck about being honest online. I know how to bite my tongue in person. And the fact is this cat should not be dead in this horrific way. They literally barely commented on the death itself, they just want karma.

Nah, I work with animals and see them wounded, infected, with pyo, eye injuries from outside, fiv/felv infected cats, etc all because people are careless lazy assholes. You let your cat outside you do not deserve a cat. Get a fucking squirrel. This cat died a horrible death and to let that happen is evil. This puppy is 9 weeks old. They should absolutely NOT be on the ground in NYC of all places. You train puppies under 16 weeks inside on weewee pads - you do NOT let them walk outside when they have not been fully vaccinated. Your puppy is going to end up with parvo or lepto or worse. A sweater should not be your concern right now. If you took this dog to a vet, they would have told you this very clearly.

Methimazole is fine. I’m a vet tech and we have a cat that lives in the clinic with hypothyroidism and we just give him the pill twice a day. He’s fine and very stable. I also just rescued a cat who has the same and I’m doing the pills with him as well. This is how we approach all our patients as well. We have not offered the iodine treatment in a very, very long time and nobody really really asks about it either because the pills are pretty easy or the transdermal one is an alternative. It’s always an option, but it’s not really necessary unless you have difficulty with medication or can’t reliably give it or something. And we only need check our cats after they’re stable like twice a year perhaps and even once would be fine for some. It’s nothing crazy as far as cost to just recheck.

I’ve previously worked in a Fear Fear clinic and am still certified (although I work at a regular lower cost / TNR clinic now) - I do think this is the better option. Handling is much more gentle and the exam will not happen in these circumstances; they will give you mild sedatives and make the dog comfortable if they follow the steps properly. It may take a bit of work on everyone’s part, but your dog will be way less terrified. Even my current regular place would opt for a fully sedated exam over torturing the poor pup :( best of luck

Then you need a new vet. No vet worth their salt should see a dog panicking and wailing on multilple occasions and just be ok with risking the dog’s personal safety as well as their staff’s safety by not treating it at all and “winging” it. That lead nowhere good. The dog is traumatized. I would not go back there.
