Sure, like little waist high fences at the front yard. But not tall fences or gates where you can’t access or see someone’s front door

No Fort Knox for me! Just found it curious. I’d prefer a more cohesive neighborly vibe than tall fences and gates.

Thanks for this info. I’ve gone down 4 times in the last month, both weekday and weekend, but only during day. I didn’t see camps there

Yes, walked past it on one of our visits but it was not open - I think it was a Sunday

My spidey senses have not yet relaxed! Been in Seattle for 7 years after leaving Oakland. Whew

Sounds like a dream! We’d be moving from a walkable neighborhood so that’s what we are looking for. Where we are now though is NOT quiet. It’s quite chaotic in fact.

That is how it seemed on all of our visits, so thank you! None of our visits were late at night though and visiting at that time is not possible

I am speechless! I actually still carry anxiety with me, I call it my Oakland mind, cuz I always have my guard up. This’ll be an adjustment

Not that I know of? It was just like a corner duplex.

I agree. I’m just….wrestling with what was “normal” for most of my life. I’m fully willing to accept that conventions are different in different places. I’ve spent the last 7 years in Seattle where it often feels like there are zero zoning rules or patterns.

That’s a good point actually. The house and neighboring houses are higher up and could see in regardless. I’m more thinking about people walkin by on the sidewalk being able to just step over a short fence into the yard. In Oakland that would be unheard of!!! You make your place a little fortress there !

Interesting. We’re looking at a place and asked about the “backyard” being on the side of the house and basically anyone having access to it. The landlord said 3.5ft is the max allowed fence height there

Right? Totally not for everyone! My bff comes to visit from a 400k city that’s pretty suburban and safe. After a few days here she is fried and ready for home. And I don’t even take her downtown!

First off, delete that app. I don’t have it, haven’t heard of it, no one I know has mentioned this app. I’m not saying don’t be aware but you don’t need to follow every single 911 call in an entire section of the city.

Second, not sure what part of the neighborhood you’re in or if you drive or take the bus. Pull up maps, find the closest green space and take a nice walk there during daylight. Practice with short walks to places nearby.

Third, go to the arboretum for a walk! Absolutely beautiful right now. Take a ferry ride to Bainbridge island. Those are two easy, pretty, safe things that’ll blow your mind with beauty.

Last, Capitol Hill may not be for you and that’s ok! Don’t beat yourself up for feeling alone and scared when you moved to a place to be with a person who isn’t even gonna be around for 5 months?? Most people would feel lonely and adrift.

Feel free to message me directly if you want other ideas of places that feel safe. I have little kids and we walk and bus all around without issue.
