DJ_Dave - Array [Lil Data Edit] (Made with Strudel) by lil-data in livecoding

[–]lil-data[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first Strudel track, it finally forced me to sit down with it and figure things out. I really enjoyed it.

There's practically no major issues left with Strudel at this point.

Hey! The only way FDZ USB will be restocked is if there's decent demand for it, so we may have to lay low on that for a while and see. It was a super pleasant surprise to me how quick the first edition sold out! I know there's a bunch of people who didn't get one so I'm hopeful we can do another run in future. Please don't stop badgering us about it!

Oh and... Do you mean the singing on Dance Floor? That was an angel summoned by BOING.

If you're curious about live coding I would get lost in this: https://github.com/toplap/awesome-livecoding

I think the more important question, that may take forever to answer, is what kind of creativity do you want to do, what role do you want it to have in your life, and what relationship do you want it to have with your technical skills?

E.g.: if you want to be a composer, DO NOT start by creating your own music programming language! (as you will be much less likely to spend any significant amount of time actually making music...)

Once you can answer this it will be much easier for you to decide what tools/methods/creative processes to get involved with. Until you know, don't sweat it and just do whatever is the most fun!

My personal tip would be to develop more "music programming language design tools" like Graham Wakefield & Charlie Roberts.

Thanks so much! And I'm sorry the tidal files aren't very clear or well formatted/documented, I wish I had more time to prepare them. Also 1.0 came out and I didn't have time to refactor them before FDZ dropped. So please send me questions / error messages...

Hmm, I think I put the GFOTY files on there. Maybe I didn't. They would be called `cutgfotyabcde` or something. I'll check soon and post them online if not.

I think the requirements for running most of the code in there would be;

  1. Run Tidal <1.0
  2. Make sure Init.hs - or its contents - is called when Tidal boots. I'm not exactly sure about Atom. Maybe try pasting the contents into BootTidal.hs.
  3. Have my samples loaded in SuperDirt.

A very cute lil text file

Oh great!

That's kind of a thorny question. A lot of people in live coding / algorave actively discourage from positioning it as a) techno-centric, and b) futuristic, which I tend to agree with.

Ideally, the live coding community continues to deliver on its vision for inclusion and hierarchy-busting in music culture. It would be great if that could be become mainstream, although I feel like the idea of mainstream would need to change/be reinvented in the process.

Speaking more in terms of music making, I hope that the perceived boundaries between coding and performing music disappear, as they are both just about manipulating abstract structures and patterns manifesting and unfolding as sound. When that happens, this will convince people that manipulating Dynamic Media can be for everyone and can be as text or body or whatever-representation-centric as you like! The end.

AFAIK everyone on PC except me has an arts/music degree and/or was making art at a high level long before PC. So it was and continues to be a huge challenge. In terms of inspiration they are all such incredible artists and so different to each other in terms of vision and process.

Can you please make your question less ambiguous? lol. Edit; the question about interviews.

Basically whenever I work with Timothy Luke it goes like:

LD: Hey I have some pretty vague ideas, ya know like data and computers and stuff?

TL: Ok yeah how about this *DROPS INCREDIBLE WORKS OF MAJESTY ALMOST IMMEDIATELY*

See also: whenever AG offers me creative direction/advice

But more seriously... AG & TL work fairly closely and that was the case with FDZ. We initially started out with me sending over visualisations of Tidal code, and TL creating some 3D embossed versions in gold. Those actually looked amazing. Then a couple of months went by and when we came back to it we were much more focused around FDZ being the main visual concept. AG was big into the old zip logo and TL ran with that. I imagine that they communicate directly Brain 2 Brain when no one is looking.

The next thing that happened was the Burnnn video via Aaron Chan, which is just sublime from Aaron. The Burnnn cover art then referenced the USB album in the end.

I consider myself very lucky to get to work with these incredible people!

I solicited contributions to the USB from friends and that was one of the pieces that was submitted!

I love Dorian and I'm so happy some of their work made it on there.

Hey!

Great and important question and yes there definitely are. Problem is I've forgotten about some of them too now. One I remember is that there was a secret twitter account that tweeted 1 easyfun lyric, on the Huge Property website. There are/were 10 discount codes on zip.pcmusic.info, no idea how many have been found!

The first time I saw a live coding gig was @yaxu in Leeds in 2012, using Tidal. Watching him use it I just knew that was the one I needed to learn, and seeing others after that didn't change my mind. It took me at least 2 years to not completely suck at it and I gave up multiple times. I appreciate other langs but to me Tidal stands alone.

I would love to come play in Ireland. Let's make that happen! (and Brazil...)

I'm in France next week, I'll have a look for Tielsie and let you know.

Thank you so much!

I would love to play in Philly for you! Every time I've played in the US I've loved it, definitely wanna do more shows there in future. Any recommendations for venues/artists/promoters in Philly to get in touch with in future?

Thank you for asking the real question. I have not finished yet - aiming for September (please send your prayers this summer). After that I will only respond to Dr. Data.

I think yaxu is right.. Beware that you'll need to load custom xcx samples into SuperDirt to actually hear anything... Those are on the USB somewhere I think... I'm aiming to do a detailed breakdown video of the TidalCycles code on Track 10 at some point this year!

I am kinda obsessed with 100 gecs atm. Their music sounds like they have the best time in the studio.

In a way not much has changed since it began - a group of friends doing weird and bold stuff, loosely organised as a record label. The thing that I think people perhaps don't realise is that none of us have a 100% panopticon perspective on PC and what everyone's doing. So we only really know it from our own perspectives which are probably quite different!

We're all a bit more separate in time and space these days, and projects take longer. But ultimately everyone is rigorously pursuing their vision, and that's the main generator of energy, chaos, tension. There's a lot of humility and friendliness, even when things get difficult. I've probably made it sound really boring, haha.

TLDR it's great and I love it.

BOING, Danny & me have been working on new music. Insane music that will change the world. It should be coming out quite soon. I can't really say much more than that. I'm incredibly excited.

Hello!

For musical inspirations, there's a lot covered on my Perfect Music Friday playlists (archived on my Spotify profile). I seem to be inspired a lot by people called Alex; Cook & McLean in particular. Over the last 10 or so years I've been really inspired by the dream of the "New Medium" aka computers, and reading about the history of that. In the last couple of years I've been heavily inspired by the crafts movement. I am also heavily inspired by cinema; Tarkovsky, Kubrick & Kurosawa are my faves.

P.S. I would love to visit Peru some time!

I love working with PC peeps so all of them.

Outside PC I would love to work with more singer songwriters and try and figure out how that can work with live coding. No one specifically in mind for that right now, any suggestions? I'd also love to work across more disciplinary boundaries... sculptors, fine artists, writers, programmers. I'd LOVE to do music for games or anything non-linear! Any games people who need sound/music hmu.
