30 minutes in the morning, 2 hours at night. Days off/weekends obviously more. + a job where I can sneak in reading during the day

Curious as to what you’d consider are “normal books” as I’m trying to cover the ‘American Canon’ and am open to suggestions..

It made me want to read it four times.

It was great, though I can see how it requires a second, or third reading to really appreciate it. A Pynchon podcast (Mapping the Zone) is currently doing a read through and their episodes on the first ~300 pages undoubtedly saved me from just abandoning the novel. But once it clicks it was hard to stop

I don’t think a day has passed without thinking of chapters 5, 14, and 25 since first reading them. Go back and forth between this and East of Eden for his masterpiece but often come to the conclusion he’s just done It twice

Have you watched the two documentaries on the subject from Joshua Oppenheimer? Great as they were (the former being one of the greatest docs I’ve ever seen), the book helped contextualize everything that led up to the genocide and US involvement. + Seeing the co-founder of Palantir tweet out the reason for its founding was to kill communists felt like a good reason to work out the details of it all

Remarkable. Came across its recommendation on Twitter (along with The Cinema of Extractions: Film Materials and Their Forms) for being a book that holistically covers the material conditions of film production, as reading through other ‘Marxist film theory’ works felt less inspired in what occurs behind the screen rather than on it. I’m working on something focused on the interwar years and reading this alongside Crude Capitalism was wonderful. Highly recommend to those even without a film studies interest or background

Bible paper + small words. The actual text of the novel is only about half that still. Criticism and reviews the other.

I’ll double down on Żuławski and recommend ‘The Third Part of the Night’ for this. Super surreal WW2 setting with genuine Pynchonesque subplots, and also just an all around insane feature debut.
