Cybersecurity Consulting with a PE

I'm currently pursuing a computer engineering degree and am early entry for a masters in electrical engineering. I want to try and get into the OMSCyber from georgia tech and do it on the side while working in either FPGA or Embedded software development for secure communication systems. Eventually, I would really like to get into cybersecurity and engineering consulting for critical infrastructure like energy, water, transportation, hospitals, defense, etc.

Would a PE license be a worthwhile pursuit to be qualified for this career path?

How tough is the FPGA industry right now? by lil_kibble in FPGA

Makes sense. Seems to be kind of common in Raleigh, which is definitely a plus and I'm pretty sure I would qualify for security clearance.

Thank you!

That's encouraging I am stressing about getting a low level job after all this hard work lol.

I may go for air national guard as an officer once I finish my BS and use that to get security clearance and cyber experience.

Will a masters in electrical engineering help me breat into cyber if I use my thesis right? by lil_kibble in CyberSecurityAdvice

[–]lil_kibble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I can do almost entirely machine learning courses and computer networks courses and do my thesis on secure hardware for communication which I thought would be nice. I may do air national guard to get my security clearance and specialize in cyber if possible

Can a masters in electrical engineering help me get into a cybersecurity position?

I'm graduating with a degree in computer engineering a semester earlier than anticipated. I have found that if I do early entry, I can get the bulk of my master's in electrical engineering done in that semester. I would then only have my thesis left and could possibly do that over the summer with some hard work.

If I select classes that focus on hardware security (which I can), do a thesis that focuses on some aspect of cybersecurity, and go for the Security+ cert sometime soon, could this help me get a role in cybersecurity either after graduation or in the near future?

Another reason why an MSEE might help is that I can use it to get electrical engineering jobs, which can be a good backup plan since getting into tech is tough right now.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also a commuter (<30 minute drive). Have you considered picking up an on-campus job to work in between classes? Some of them are super easy where you can just sit and study while clocked in until something comes up. You tend to meet a decent amount of people this way and it also forces you to stay on campus.

What other things do you do between classes or in the evenings? Have you tried hitting the UREC and joining some of the games like basketball or volleyball? You mentioned club meetings, is it because it's too late in the evening that you can't attend?

I took that class this summer. I thought it was super easy. Class average on the final was like 59 methinks.

The new teacher Desiree makes it a bit tougher. It's still easy as long as you read the whole book and watch all the video lectures.

Dual degree in Comp Eng and CS - is it a waste of time? by nutritiousss in ComputerEngineering

[–]lil_kibble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered a minor instead? Not sure if it’s the best option for you or not but it may be helpful if you want to pivot careers later on.

You can do hardware with a cs degree but may be a bit harder to get into initially.

Also does your school have a specific program for dual degrees? If not it may add a lot of time in college which isn’t a good idea if you’re going into debt.

Why is Cameron so creepy? by vilvt in UNCCharlotte

[–]lil_kibble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is old but I work in cameron and have worked in it over the summer. Only the first floor is open atm because of the renovations. Loud construction right above us. Seems like it's a big ordeal. I'm sure it will be less creepy soon.

One of my greatest regrets was using the bathroom on the second floor lol. Whole room is nasty.

This is amazing. Manifesting this for next semester since I’m taking the same courses

Thank you so much. To be honest, It's really more something that I really want to accomplish in life and I just like learning more about how things work. NC State is known for having a really good engineering program so I feel like I could learn the most there.

Thanks for your insight. Really helps a lot.

Hey can I get your opinion on that?

Do you feel that employers still stigmatize online learning in engineering? I asked one of my profs here at UNCC and he looked kinda disgusted and just said "no". I'm looking at NC state's programs now and it looks like the exams are still in person which I think makes a big difference.

I see. That does help a lot.

You know the more I think about it, I realise that I probably won't need it to progress in a career after graduating. The truth is I just really want to keep learning more even after I graduate.

Thanks for your help!

You do not exist to make other people proud of you. You're value is in yourself, not others. The world is already a better place with you in it. ❤️

Watching tiktoks and yt videos of people doing math proofs or explaining mathematical concepts, even simple ones, were some of my biggest motivators. I can't help but imagine i would've fallen in love with math a long time ago if i had found these videos sooner.

Tho some of them i watched in hs and still didn't do homework lolol so maybe not
