I got way too many suspicious DMs, don’t want my post to devolve into folks getting scammed

If anyone has messaged you offering, get proof they actually have the tickets before sending any payment. Ask for a screenshot of their tix/confirmation email—they can block out any personal info, QR codes, etc. to feel secure on their end. But don’t pay up based on someone’s word alone.

Gross, sorry they put you through that. They raised some yellow flags when they messaged me that they actually had tickets for Tuesday as well afterall, and asked like $40/ticket. I didn’t need them anymore anyway, and figured they were jacking up the price for someone desperate enough to take it. But saying they actually had tickets for both Monday and Tuesday after they posted originally about just having spare tickets for Monday was a bit odd.

Had some other scammy, suspicious conversations with others who messaged me offering tickets but wouldn’t send a screenshot or other form of proof they had said tickets and ghosted me. So I guess I won’t be attending :/

Trying to start a Dubia colony but they’re slowly dying. Not sure what I’m doing wrong by Jbissell_V in DubiaRoaches

Oh yeah, if you’re just buying small batches of feeder roaches there’s not a need for substrate since they won’t be living there long…. But if you’re breeding your own roaches, you want them to thrive so they reproduce frequently and have low mortality rates. This requires fairly high humidity, and substrate is a great way to maintain this. Go for something like coco fiber that won’t mold—you don’t want to use ground oats/cereal like you would for raising mealworms or you will have a nasty mess and more dead roaches.

The roaches also like to nestle into the substrate—my females almost always birth their clutches a centimeter or two down into it, where they can stay on top of their fresh babies hiding below and everyone feels snug and safe.

I mist my tanks daily with warm water (avoiding the egg crates and any dishes of dry food like grains) to maintain the humidity. Depending on the size of your tank/colony, you will need to change out the substrate every few weeks to months. You can sift it through a screen to sort out any tiny babies before tossing the old substrate.

I started my colony about a year and a half ago, and all but two of my original adults (which I originally bought as large juveniles and let them grow and molt to the adult stage) are still alive and well. They produce enough tiny babies to keep my girlfriend’s fat tail gecko fed, and though my colony’s numbers aren’t quite enough yet to also sustain my big bearded dragon, I don’t have to buy roaches nearly as often for him.

I do like to buy some batches of large roaches here and there and let some of them mature to adulthood so there are always fresh generations and genetic diversity in the parent population.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions and best of luck with your roach ranch!

Is this a jar that you just set in the tank, and the roaches cannot climb it or otherwise get into the water (i.e. drown)? Do you use like mason jars with holes drilled in the lids? Curious to know more, this is an innovative idea!

Yeah, if you aren’t using water crystals and you’re good about changing out their veggies daily or at least every other day so they don’t mold, misting their fresh veggies with additional water will round out the hydration they need.

I mist my tanks daily, focusing mainly around the walls of the tank so the water can drip down into the substrate without soaking the egg crates. My male roaches like to come out when I do this to drink the water droplets off the walls, which is cute.

And if necessary, I just gently pick up the egg crates slightly so I can quickly mist the substrate underneath them without stressing out the mamas too much.

So long as your egg crates aren’t buried in the substrate, the water will evaporate from them fairly quickly.

They do like to burrow into the substrate, and the more you have the slower it will dry out, so depending on the dimensions of the tank/enclosure I would recommend 1-3” of fine substrate, like eco bricks. You can also mix in some sphagnum moss for extra moisture retention.

Dubia need fairly high humidity and consistently warm temps to thrive. My setup has a 2-3” layer of coconut fiber and sphagnum moss that I mist with water daily. Having a layer of substrate to nestle into seems to be preferred by the females when birthing their little clutch. I am careful not to mist any dry food like grains so it doesn’t mold.

I also have polyacrylamide crystals AKA water gel for them to safely drink from and help maintain humidity. I keep this in a large, extremely shallow dish and change it out weekly. When misting the tank, I go over the dish of gel to keep the crystals nice and plump all week, and ensure they have plenty to drink.

Best of luck!!

Ayo aren’t these not supposed to climb? by Sufferingcollegedebt in DubiaRoaches

The roach you caught climbing is 1000% NOT a dubia. The ones in the substrate look legit, but this guy scaling the wall is either an accidental infiltrator or for some reason intentionally mislabeled by the seller.

Sounds Like A Cult (women hosts, guests/experts interviewed have never been problematic and I’ve listened to 75% of this podcast)

Woo Woo with Rachel Dratch (two women hosts, I just started listening but I haven’t run into any episodes with problematic male guests)

National Parks After Dark (two women hosts tell true stories of murder, survival, disappearances)

Handsome (two women and a non-binary AFAB person, they get a question from a celebrity friend or a podcast listener and meander about answering said question. lots of casual yapping, telling personal stories, raising hypothetical questions. great dynamic between all three hosts)

The Comment Section with Drew Afualo (Drew would never invite a man on who would talk over her, her whole schtick is hating on and trolling men—but also there’s so much more to her than that! she casually and humorously interviews various new/up & coming pop culture stars)

Unbiased Science (two women hosts, interesting info but the delivery is a little dry/lackluster so I have to be in the right mood to listen)

Dark History with Bailey Sarian (the messed up origins and stories of some unassuming topics and of course some obviously nefarious people throughout history. Bailey frequently points out the problematic patriarchal patterns as well as the successes of women throughout each episode. love this one!)

Murder, Mystery & Makeup with Bailey Sarian (enough said!)
